system alert! popup

  1. Yesterday I noticed a blinking icon in the system tray, which was accompanied by several popups leading to fake spyware removal sites. I ran adaware and removed all of the other malware programs, but this one did not get cleaned, nor can it be deleted from the add/remove programs list. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Very Important: Before deciding whether you should clean or reformat your system, go and read this thread HERE and decide what it is you want to do.

If after reading the above, you wish to clean your system, do the following.

Download the Autoruns programme from HERE. When the programme runs, click options and make sure the "Hide Microsoft Entries" is ticked. Click the file menu and select refresh. Click the save icon and save the Autoruns log to wherever you want.

Then, go and read the Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions. Follow all the instructions exactly.

Post fresh HJT, AVG Antispyware and Combofix logs as attachments into this thread, only after doing the above. Also, attach the Autoruns log.

Also, let me know the results of the AVG Antirootkit scan.

    Regards Howard

Thanks for the quick response. I am in the process of downloading the zonelabs firewall and AVG antivirus. I am guessing that I should unistall the McAfee software that I have been using?

If you intend on using AVG free and Zonealarm rather than McAfee, then you will need to completely uninstall McAfee first.

I just installed the CCleaner program. Do I need to check the advanced tabs?

There`s no need to touch the advanced tab. Just follow the instructions as given.

Thanks for the reply. It didnt specify in the instructions whether or not to check the advanced option under the windows tab, and I just wanted to make sure.
