Tech workers promise they will never help build Trump's proposed Muslim registry

Donald Trump is set to meet with tech leaders this afternoon to discuss how the industry will work with the Republican’s administration. But a group of employees from major technology firms is pledging never to cooperate with one of the President Elect’s most controversial proposals: the implementation of a Muslim registry.

There are currently 411 signatories from companies including Google, IBM, Twitter, and Nvidia on the Never Again.Tech list. The group members describe themselves as “engineers, designers, business executives, and others whose jobs include managing or processing data about people.”

Trump has rarely spoken about his plans for a Muslim database since he won the election, but it’s still on the minds of tech workers who are pledging not to take part in its construction.

"We are choosing to stand in solidarity with Muslim Americans, immigrants, and all people whose lives and livelihoods are threatened by the incoming administration's proposed data collection policies," the pledge reads. "We refuse to build a database of people based on their Constitutionally protected religious beliefs. We refuse to facilitate mass deportations of people the government believes to be undesirable."

The group compares the register to historical instances when technology played a part in human rights abuses, such as IBM’s collaboration with the Nazis during World War II to digitize and streamline the Holocaust.

"We acknowledge that genocides are not merely a relic of the distant past— among others, Tutsi Rwandans and Bosnian Muslims have been victims in our lifetimes. Today we stand together to say: not on our watch, and never again."

It also advocates that its organizations destroy high-risk datasets and backups, make end-to-end encryption the default wherever possible, and demand appropriate legal process should the government request user data be handed over.

The proposed Muslim register will no doubt be one of the subjects discussed at today’s meeting. Attendees include Tim Cook, Sheryl Sandberg, Larry Page, Elon Musk, Satya Nadella, and possibly Jeff Bezos. One person who missed out on an invite is Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey; a bit surprising, considering how much Trump loves to tweet. Maybe it’s because the company recently said it wouldn’t hesitate in banning him if he breaks its rules.

Random psycho goes on a killing spree? We must have a database to track gun owners!

Random jihadists go on killing sprees throughout the west? We must protect Muslims from prejudice!

What a patriotic lot.

Maybe everybody's overreacting. Maybe he just wants to lay out a proposal to build nice, new, comfortable accommodation for the Muslims... based on Auschwitz, Sobibor, Treblinka etc.

I think I am going to start a fake news website to capitalize on the masses gullibility. Seems easy enough from all the stories you see.

Track the fanatics? Yes. Track muslims? Not even remotely true.

Only Muslims are taught to convert or kill those that do not believe. Keeping track of fanaticism seems prudent. Where are the Muslims that decry the core teachings of the Koran, that all should live in peace. There don't seem to be any. If child molesters can be legally tracked, self-proclaimed enemies of "Western ways" should be also. We really need Muslims that are peaceful to step up and protect non-Muslims.

There are more than enough government programmers to do the task, they certainly don't need to go out and spend our tax $$ for something so simple, in fact, why would they not simply add to the multiple OTHER databases that exist? Sounds like a task for the NSA ..... which probably had done it years ago!

Either way, the peaceful way would be to not have a registry specifically for one specific religion or race.

It really annoys me when people simply lump all muslims together and say "trump hates muslims".

WRONG.

There is a civil war going on - that's been going on for some time. Shia vs. Sunni.

America has chosen sides in a civil war.

Of course trump has muslim supporters: he has supporters who are against the side we've chosen to fight (with them) against.

Simply put: america shouldn't be taking in anyone from a region that we are at hostilities with unless there is vetting. Christian Arabs get preference because we aren't fighting them. We are helping them NOT get their heads cut off by ISIS.

This battle is mostly against Sunnis of varying regions who are fighting Shia

Because the POTUS' job is execution of law and he is the "top cop" his job absolutely is to ensure the safety of Americans both home and abroad.

Notice how "they" always wanna change the subject to "racism" or "xenophobia" when America talks about boarder control.

And that's why I voted Trump.

Hillary, Yellen, Merkel, Pelosi and the rest of the Globalists can go f...

Agreed! What people also fail to understand and relate to our past is that in order to initiate a genocide, you must disarm the population. The Nazi's did this, and the Left wants to do it as well. Trump wants more firearms freedoms. The Left also want to control how you think and how you act. Sounds a hell of a lot more Fascist than Trump, albeit more subversive. You can be a nationalist without being violent and without being racist. He isn't against immigrants, he is against ILLEGAL immigrants and there is a difference. He isn't against Muslims, he is against the Extremists, who as we know are of that religion and we are unable to tell without vetting them. People who throw around Trump is a racist xenophobe are those who wish for a fantasy utopia. Sorry to break it to you, it will never happen. Join reality and actually look at the world around you. In more detail, the world around you that wants to kill you or control you.

How's that for a first post?

Pretty solid, my friend.

"We refuse to build a database of people based on their Constitutionally protected religious beliefs. We refuse to facilitate mass deportations of people the government believes to be undesirable."

So when Google, Microsoft and Yahoo were happily helping the government keep tabs on so-called "Christian extremists" who've never advocated any sort of violence, that was OK I guess. This wonderfully illustrates the main reason Trump got elected: middle class Christians and conservatives were sick of being made the scapegoats for all the ills of society, most of which were created by insane liberal policies over the past 50 years. As a few brave liberal commentators have actually pointed out, the left created Trump. He is the brutal natural antibody that's arisen to counteract the disease that's weakened America to the point that a single major shock would destroy it. Trump understands that only wealth creation and economic growth can fight poverty in the long run and he's going to push for that no matter what the delusional snowflakes think. I didn't like him at first and in some ways I still don't, but all he's really doing is removing the blinders from our eyes. We already have a ruling class of corporate-governmental oligarchs. With Trump's big business appointees to cabinet positions he's simply doing away with the illusion of any separation between industry and political leadership - they have been one and the same for a very long time. Now we're on par with other major democracies like Japan, South Korea and so on who make no pretense about who really calls the shots or gets special treatment. Frankly, an honest partnership between our biggest employers and the voting public would be a pretty amazing thing so long as worker rights were maintained. Strong unions (with anti-corruption housecleanings) will be instrumental in making the pro-growth vision of Trump and his allies work for every American. We need more jobs that pay a living wage and strong borders to help reduce the ranks of the dependent class. America has been on a long downhill slide since the massive additions to the welfare rolls in the 70's and nobody has made a serious effort to reverse the trend. When 47% of the population doesn't pay taxes that's the definition of "unsustainable."

If the GOP elders had supported a candidate who didn't change his positions every time the press called him a nasty name, that person would have been a shoe-in. Ted Cruz was probably the most electable of the pack but the party chose to push Jed (a textbook RINO who nobody wanted to vote for). So the majority of the party went rogue and chose the wild card, figuring that if he does make mistakes he'll learn from them because he's not a career politician. Trump isn't the hero we need but the hero we deserve.

A registry is a bad idea.... sure has a whiff of Hitler about it. You can't target an entire group of people based on religion, that just isn't moral. Everyone needs to be scrutinized equally.

Collaboration with other law enforcement and immigration agencies throughout the world to help us prevent those with known terrorist ties from coming into the country is a good direction to go. Also continue efforts in public surveillance, with trained staff to look for suspicious activity occurring in populated areas. On top of that, monitoring web communications that freely goes through the internet, and anything suspicious they need to get a warrant to search deeper. Finally efforts by citizens, family members, friends, and anonymous but observant people can report suspicious behavior to law enforcement. All of these methods I mention have helped us post-attack to find who did it. Now we need to be proactive and do this all the time, looking for planned attacks and other hints that something is going down. I'm sure all of this is already being done but on a very small scale. It needs to be increased enormously... then we would have a better chance at preventing terrorist attacks.

Citizens can also help by being armed. I know the left hates this but with more good people armed you will increase the chances of stopping some terrorist attacks from starting, or stopping them mid-way through. I know you cant stop all of them, particularly vehicle and bomb attacks which are almost impossible to stop with an armed citizen.... but an armed citizen can stop an armed terrorist. A majority of terrorist attacks have been with a single armed terrorist.

Well said...the bottom line: LIBERALISM = AMERICA'S CANCER

Trump is not even president yet, and yet the hysteria continues. This nonsensical article is full of blah blah blah. Just like the fake news that Russia is responsible for Trump being elected. Give me a break. He will be sworn in Jan 20th. Deal with it. If he turns out to be a turd, we will vote him out in 4 years. Makes one wonder why we didn't vote Obama out after 4 years is beyond me.

Reading the responses to this lightens my heart. There are plenty O people that are aware of what the left is trying to do

The bottom line is that all the tech industry and the left care about are more votes, more potential customers and a psychotic agenda. "Oh, the administration wants to import loads of Muslims with no vetting whatsoever? Let em' in and give em' special treatment! We got Democrats to elect, iPhones to sell and Christians to repress!"
