Texting from email

I don't know how to word this to avoid confusion, so I'm trying to find out how to enter a persons cell phone number in an email like gmail, yahoo or ?? to text them?
A friend of mine texted me quite some time ago at my email address & I replied & it added it successfully yet a relative texted me & I replied & it worked once, not since.
Any idea(s)? More confused now than before? lol

Ok, I've tried variations of that & will try again but what bugs me is a friend texted me & I replied & it was sent & my email program added it to my contact list yet when I tried later to send using it, no way. Very confusing.
