WASHINGTON -- California State Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer, a 60-year-oldveteran of 30 years in Democratic politics, was in Washington two weeks ago for the national conference of state attorneys general and dropped by a federal district courtroom for an hour or so. In progress was the latest stage of antitrust proceedings against Microsoft. His interest may have been stimulated by the more than $75,000 in campaign contributions from corporate rivals of the embattled technology giant.

Ayn Rand had an interesting analysis of antitrust laws.

If the company prices the product too high - they are guilty of gouging.

Too low and they are accused of driving the competition out of business.

The "correct" price turns out to be wherever the government thinks it should be.

My friend John H. blames Clinton & says, "The broad market decline can be traced, nearly to the day, back to the original filing by the X42 by the Justice Dept. All you need is a NASDAQ chart to prove it. The stock drop of Microsoft & the related Dot.Com industry has cut my retirement assets in half!"
