The Cornerplay: The iPhone 6 is DOA and the iPhone 6 Plus is the killer

The iPhone 6 Plus is a clearer iPad mini killer, at least until the only put dual app-mode into the iPad mini and iPad Air. I am a bit surprised that they released 16 GB iPhone 6 models considering that most new apps will now be coming with 2x and 3x icons, thereby bloating their size.

I'm also surprised that they're releasing a 16 GB model. Once again that "Apple tax" comes in to play as Apple's competitors offer twice as much memory for a lower price.

And I'm surprised that they stuck with a monaural speaker arrangement as well. A new model is a chance to improve upon shortcomings in the past.

On the Pros, I see larger screen and better camera, an equal to or slightly better battery life, and overall faster. But I wish there were more to talk about here.

I'm going for the regular iPhone 6. Not unless you're carrying a purse or have a fanny pack will any guy be able to put that 5.5" in their pocket and not feel uncomfortable.

"the perception that 5.5-inches is too large"

Perception? I can't imagine riding my bike with a 5.5" phone in my pocket.

iPhone 6 is not DOA. Most users are happy with the smaller size just look how long it lasted. All the women sitting here are not going to the 6" phone. The 6plus may be to much to hold for most plus most people like something there use to.

"Let’s face it. A big part of the attraction for getting iPhone is brand. For those who don’t care as much about what a phone's brand says about a person, they are already on Android, where large, 1080p screens have been a staple for years."

So the only people using iPhones are those who are concerned about the image they gain by using an Apple product? It couldn't possibly be because of the superior experience, higher quality apps, better design? Wow...

Wow, what a dicky thing to say. My android eats your iphone alive.

"The only reason to purchase the iPhone 6 over its superior sibling is price and the perception that 5.5-inches is too large."

This is preposterous. Maybe if you are 6 feet + and 190 lbs, but if you are a whopping 5'8" and 130 lbs then trying to stuff a 5.5" screen phone in your pocket sucks. I'll stick with smaller screens.

The 5.5" may be overkill for sizing on a phone. I have a Nexus 4, which is larger than an iPhone 5s, and seems just about the right size to carry about. It slips into my front pant pocket nicely, but then again and Nexus 7 tablet fit as well -- a tad too big though :)) My screen is 4.7" nice size. The Nexus 5 is 5", and is still a manageable size. Maybe the 5.5" will be OK -- just not so much of need for anything quite that larger however. The iPhone 5s is too small -- too narrow a screen -- really was too small.

Android welcomes you :) You can always get an LG G3, Sammy, or a Nexus 5 with a pure version of Android - always quickly updated. I will consider all three OS next time, though when going top line, I doubt WP is a good choice -- resale? Apps? More likely going Android, or iPhone... nice build and camera of WP is still tempting ;)

I think only time will tell. I'm a spec junkie but I will be getting the 4.7" not the jumbo 5.5" Sure I would love HD screen, I would LOVE LOVE better battery life, and I would love the better camera but I'm a guy. I don't want something so mammoth lugging around in my pants pocket. Basically all those specs will be at least the same as the 5 I have now. Disappointing yes... But I also need more space..So Apple is forcing me to spend another $100 to get the 64GB version. I think once the first crop of people who think bigger is always better start changing their tune to bigger is sometimes too big the 6 will start surging in sales. Hopefully the 6s or the 7 will give the full spec treatment to the smaller model. Apple needs to stop going thinner..no protruding camera and a larger battery. I would gladly have a thinker phone than my iPhone 5 if it meant I could go all day without a re-charge. And they need to go up, way up on the memory. 16GB should not of existed this time. It is a pure money grab for anyone who knows 16GB is way to little now adays.

I have a Nexus 4 with 8GB and 5.6GB is still free space -- no problem. My stuff is stored in the Cloud.

Clicked on a previous reply, of which I stated the wrong amount of free space out of 8GB -- should be 2.8GB. Well indeed it did post, but as yet an additional post. Sorry about that.

As for batteries, they should have removable batteries and a longer battery life. You pay a premium price, you should get a longer lasting battery. A thicker, removable back, with microSD storage capability and the ability to change that older battery out -- or have a spare one, would be so much better.

+1

Ah, the usual "bigger is better" mantra... the one that leads us to have fat SUVs all over the place, towering over each other. This article is such hype! Users are to choose their screen size, and frankly Apple has stooped to the stupid size race rather than stay the course; the 4s-5 screens were just fine, fitting into pockets and places like a portable phone should. Fine by me that there be a fatblet option, but to say the 6+ is categorically superior... well, that's like saying SUVs are categorically superior to sedans. Sigh.

It is definitely entertaining to watch Apple playing catchup, and hilarious to see them fall short. Nice one Apple, why don't you just send Samsung a nice big check?

That is an interesting thought about making the body thicker for a bigger battery. Most people put a case on anyways so it doesn't matter much in the end. I feel like the resolution on the iPhone 6 was on purpose: to save battery. There really isn't any use for a 1080P screen on a phone. As long as the ppi is high enough, I am satisfied. I wish the iMessage interface on the 6+ would translate to the 6 since it is a good use of empty space.

I don't care about the features a phone has. I never use them. I use my iPhone for business and as long as I can text, email, access the web and actually phone someone, it does the job! The reason I Iike the iPhone is it's easy to use and intuitive.

Manufacturers have dug themselves a big hole and can only sell phones on 'bigger and better' features.

While the article offered compelling arguments as to why the 6+ ought to be considered over the smaller 6, seemingly contrary to many users, I tend to carry more than just my phone in my breast pocket. I'm starting to think that I'll need to run out and get a backup 5S for when mine eventually fails as I have no interest in the larger screens offered by the 6 series.

Give me a OS/IS camera lens on a 5S chassis that can lay on a table FLAT and I might consider it when the time comes to replace my current phone. However I don't mind dragging my iPad-MiniR or MBR around when I have need for a larger screen. Playing "Xcom" on a iPhone (even the 6+) would be painful at best.

I don't see a lesser phone in the iphone 6 vs the 6+ at all. I do believe it's a matter of personal preference to have a larger screen or not. I see people with their huge Android phones and I cringe. I'm a girl with small hands, and personally I want to be able to handle the phone with one hand and click anywhere on the screen. I tried with the bigger phones and it's a real pain.

We've become so demanding with what we want out of our phones that they've grown to become gigantic pieces of hardware. It's like an obsession to do EVERYTHING from that one small tool. If I want a larger screen I will grab myself a tablet or my laptop, thank you.

I ordered a 128GB Silver iPhone 6. I already have iPads and a MacBook Pro. They don’t fit in the pockets of my jeans. I can live without avatars next to names in Messages – while your reasoning might apply to a lot of people, it doesn’t to me and plenty of others. Not to mention the iPhone 6 will be much faster and aupported for longer than the 6+: as you point out, the latter has about twice as many pixels and the exact same CPU/GPU strength. That didn’t play into my decision, but it will be interesting to see if that causes the 6 to perform much better and hold its value much longer than the 6+. When it came down to size versus speed and portability before, I chose the iPhone and the latter over Android and the former. Today the 6 is the smaller, fsster, more portable choice.

This is at last the proof! iPhone users have bashed, over and over, Android and WP users for having big screens. I have heard the argument countless times, that the iPhone has just the right size to fit in your hand and that the others are just stupid to have big screens And guess what? Just when Plus comes along, these same people go and buy it - except for a few die hard fans that is at least consistent.

This is just so funny. This proves that they will defend the iPhone no matter what!

It bugs me how highly priced these iPhones are, on contract the 128GB Plus is still $499! And as pointed out by many others, much of the tech has been available on Android or Windows Phone for more than a year or two. The cheapest iPhone 6 off contract is something like $650, too.

This is ridiculous! I have even heard the fans applaud Apple for making so much money off them. It is like giving a thief a compliment for stealing so well from you. I am sorry, I do not care whether it is Apple Samsung, LG, Moto, MS, etc etc, I will not support a company that is sucking dry its loyal customers - never!

a ford pinto and lexus share a lot of the same tech... 4 tires, windshield, steering wheel, radio, etc... but even with this same "features", one is very different then the other. Just because 2 thing share a feature, doesn't mean features are done equally. What phone do you use? Any flagship phone are priced the same. They run a business, its not a charity service. All businesses are run with the "charge what the market will bare"

Or just get an android that has better hardware than the iphone at around 300-350$ free of contract.
all hardware is not created equal, and if it is, is can have drastically different performance dependent on the software running it.... and you don't mean an "android", you mean a nexus, phones comparable to the iphone 6 are all the same price AND bound to the same contract terms.

and you don't mean an "android", you mean a nexus, phones comparable to the iphone 6
In that statement, you are suggesting the nexus is the only phone that is better than an iPhone. The better phone is a preference that may or may not have anything to do with the software running it. And there are no contract terms, if the phone is paid for in advance. Paying 300-350 as @Puiu suggested, would buy your way out of a contract.

no, I am am saying that the nexus is the only phone that is better then iphone. When he suggested the price, the only "new" phone in that category at that price would be the nexus, so I said said "nexus, rather then android" to clarify.

I was nervous getting the 5 because I thought it was too big. I accepted it but prefered the 4Ss size. Now theyre both bigger... APple should have made the smaller 6 the same as the 5.

I will now keep my 5 until it dies because I do not want anything bigger
