Don’t you hate it when you’re excitedly waiting for something to arrive, but then find out there’s been a delay, even if it’s only for a few days? Impatient fans of Samsung’s non-exploding line of Galaxy handsets – the S series – will be disappointed to learn that the upcoming S8 and S8+ have had their release date pushed back, though only by a week.
The highly anticipated smartphones were due for worldwide release on April 21, but according to VentureBeat’s Evan Blass, who cites a “person briefed on the company’s revised target,” the S8 and S8+ will now arrive on April 28. If Blass is right, and he usually is when it comes to mobile rumors and leaks, it will mean a near month-long wait between the unveiling of the S8 phones at the March 29th Unpacked event in New York and their launch.
The Korean company will also be revealing the new and improved Gear VR headset that works with the S8/S8+ at the Unpacked event.
There’s been no reason given as to why Samsung wanted an extra seven days before releasing the new Galaxies. Blass speculates that it may be related to the low yields for the devices’ 10-nanometer Snapdragon 835/Exynos 8895 SoCs. After what happened with the Note 7, Samsung will want an S8 launch without even the slightest hiccup.
The S8 will have some stiff competition from its rivals, especially the excellent LG G6, which took just four days to hit 40,000 pre-orders in Korea (LG’s launching the handset in its native country first). Samsung’s offering could also face a challenge from Sony’s 4K-capable Xperia XZ Premium. Both phones made our Best of Mobile World Congress awards.
