The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) has quietly posted its inaugural transparency report on Tumblr yesterday, detailing information as it relates to the use of certain national security legal authorities by the NSA for calendar year 2013.

The report comes after President Obama directed the intelligence community to declassify and make public as much information about certain surveillance programs as possible.

nsa

Specifically, the report outlines information as it relates to the number of FISA orders, national security letters and requests for business records. Of particular interest is the number of targets under Section 702 of FISA – 89,138 – and the fact that it only took one order to reach those targets.

The Verge speculates this single order could be related to XKeyscore, a program described as a giant database of everything you’ve ever done online.

nsa

Even more telling, however, is the description of a “target.” As the post notes, a target could be an individual person, a group or an organization composed of multiple individuals or even a foreign power. Under that definition, the reported figures likely aren’t a good indication of the actual number of people the NSA targeted.

The report also indicates that, in some cases, one order can by its terms affect multiple targets. Alternatively, a target may be the subject of multiple orders.

The office promises to release similar information in the future on an annual basis.

So they asked Snowden to share some more info? How considerate of them.

Snowden is a traitor, a thief, a rat, and a coward

Don't believe me? fine. Then have him live with you in your country and give him a security job and see what happens...

Actually, the first three conditions you've put forward are factually true. Anyone who would dispute them is clearly ignorant of both U.S. law and the nature of Snowden's crimes.

The last condition – cowardice – is somewhat problematic, however, given the consequences of his chosen actions. The link between subservience to fear and the conscious choice to put one's self in a dire situation is lost on me, I'm afraid.

You are suffering under the delusion that everyone would have a problem with that. On the other hand you seem to want a security officer that will stand behind their employers, no matter how criminal they may be. If there ever is a time when the security officer must choose a side "the people or the employer". Which side do you honestly want the security officer to take? If you choose the employer, you are as pathetic as any terrorist. Once again here I am defending the people right to know how we are being treated. I want to know because I want to know if they can become threats in the future.

transparent but done quietly? I think I need more lessons about transparency as I understood it to be 'open and loud'.

Snowden is a traitor, a thief, a rat, and a coward
the same can also be said about the NSA. lack of accountability, mass surveillance without court order. hiding behind the veil of 'national security' to justify any of its 'illegal acts'.

What Snowden did was not right but it was a good thing, it opened our eyes as to what is really going on and I think it took courage to do it but I'm afraid he cooked his goose. This is only my take on it.

Why hasn't Snowden released the KFC secret recipe? C'mon, I need that 11th secret ingredient. He knows it. Bugger his morals.

ask anonymous. for all the secrets in the world exposed by this group, kfc's secret herbs and spices remain hidden.

I wait for the day Obama declassifies information taken by NSA regarding KFC's secret recipe.;)

Just because the government may know about someone elses secret, doesn't make that a government secret. My mind is set to a more serious note, than to laugh at a KFC joke on this topic. But by all means keep posting them, I'm sure there are those just like you, who will laugh at them. Yes, I'm accusing you of not taking surveillance serious. I do hope the day never comes that you are afraid to do anything in the privacy of your own home. Do you honestly not care, if you are being watched 24/7, just to justify national security in catching someone who may or may not commit a crime? Do you honestly not care, if something you say or do can be twisted and held against you? For people who strive for diversity and freedom, you seem to be going in a "one mind and one accord" direction. Keep it up and before long we actually will be wearing the mark of the beast on our forehead.
