The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is here

all of them you can just ignore. not even Cortana affects your PC performance. it's like saying that minesweeper is bloatware.
let's be serious here, you have a problem with MS in general not the OS.

this entire thread is full of people thinking it's "cool" to hate with just weak artificial reasons (fluff reasons). I'm excluding non tech-savvy people that had some problems after upgrading - this is is a legit reason to complain and people here on techspot can help them.
Actually, I quite like Win 10 but it's full of bloatware/spyware (what OS isn't?). Fortunately what can't be trashed can be disabled and ignored relatively easily.
Nothing in this world is perfect for everybody and never will be.

Thanks for the response. I tried but it removed most of the folder contents not all of them.
if you feel like disk cleanup left some files/folders untouched you can try ccleaner. you should see the option to find and delete the old windows installation in the options list.

I must admit I'm quite impressed how well the update went, initially when I saw how major it was I thought I would end up doing a clean install from the iso. A little cleaning up (~15 GB) and I'm surprised how well everything I have tried works which admittedly isn't much since I use it as an OS, not the omnipotent all doing, all connected centre of the universe. Jury is still out on the feature changes since I haven't poked around too much yet.

Hmmm, I just watched the "This week in Windows" video in the article and to my amazement I don't use a single item featured in the video. Not one. Well I use the Edge browser, but the hype is on the extensions which I don't use. Seriously, does anyone use all of that? I'm really asking here folks.

no, not really. very few use them.
the biggest changes to win 10 with this update are mostly behind the scenes changes (fewer bugs, improved compatibility, better performance, etc) or intended for developers.
things like native bash commands using a linux kernel (partnership with ubuntu), native docker support, the removal of the small 256 character limits for paths and many other changes that a normal consumer user won't use.

just think of this update as a big service pack.

I noticed there was no mention of the downgrade in features on their pro edition...

EDIT: Yeah, damn. The retarded lock screen can't be disabled. Don't understand why they won't integrate it into one single screen like before. Although it's not much of a boon, a lot of new policies were added it seems. I can still use the Win8 style for the sound bar. I however am stuck using the Win10 style for the date and time and can't use the Win8 style one...

tin-foil hat much? you would install a product that you have no idea what it does and who made it just to disable some telemetry? and you chose one of the worst ones you could find, known to cause issues and the devs are barely active. the free version barely even does anything.

get your priorities straight dude, you are using the internet.

lol I'm not even using it.

I just posted the link for something he should check out.

had I known it was going to upset you I would have posted some other options aswell.

Phrozensoft Windows Privacy Tweaker
W10Privacy
Blackbird

The "Windows.old" can't be deleted even if you disable "read only"... it says "you require permission from SYSTEM"... Yeap, Microsoft did it again.... :(

I installed the update on both desktops yesterday without a hitch but I can't remove the Windows.old folder (I didn't perform a clean install). Anyone else having the same problem?
I recommend using CCleaner for maintenance (it will remove the old folder and other unwanted files no problem). techspot should have it in the downloads section. it's fast, simple, clean and very powerful.
ccleaner doesn't do ****....

Stop using a File Manager designed by Microsoft and you will have more freedom. Although in Windows 10 even with a third party File Manager, I've had to take ownership a dozen or so times now. I've never had to take ownership before upgrading to Windows 10.

After that update, I noticed my computer locking up at random moments, which never happened until this update. My CPU usage was over 40% at times, because of some *****ic Windows process going on in the background. If they can't get Windows right, then what's the use of really using Windows at all? One headache after another!

You're jumping to conclusions there.

It could just as easily be a third party program causing the issue as a bug that Microsoft have introduced. There a countless examples of situations such as software company fixing a bug causing programs that depend on the broken behaviour to stop working.

Find the cause of the problem before you start blaming someone for it.

I have had zero problems removing Windows.old and am actually impressed how well the OS works after the upgrade. If you know my views on MS and their practices you'll know I am no Microsoft shill.

Installed the update today without a hitch, BUT...

Now all of my context menus are right-aligned? For example, right-click on the desktop and the menu opens to the left of the mouse. Then hover over View or Sort By and that menu opens to the left as well. Same for all of the Office applications too.

What's all that about then? And more importantly, how do I change it back? :/

Ok so I have a Surface Pro that runs Windows 10 and yesterday is updated AND...

1. What's with the new "Spotlight" screen. A cover screen for the log in screen where MS advertises. I want my log in screen only. Can't disable spotlight.

2. MS is pulling data from all parts of my computer. Tried to limit the spying and snooping but other than unplugging the computer MS knows ALL!

3. Cortana is locked to Bing and Edge. What crap!!!

Wish I could load W7 Pro or Linux on this device!

what are you talking about? I've used it for years and it always did it's job. it's the one of best way to clean your PC from junk.
it just didn't... sorry to disappoint you... I've used, instead a third party cleaner

I got the result "The device is updated. Last scan time: today, 23:47". Does this mean that I already have these extensions and all innovations?)

All the bloat apps I uninstalled like Mail, XBox, One Note, Cortana, Skype, The Store etc. that I uninstalled when I 1st installed Win 10 were back again so I uninstalled them again. Rubbish like Connect, Edge, Films & TV, One Note, etc which I have absolutely no use for I cannot uninstall.

AFAIK you can not uninstall One Note ,Edge or Cortanna (now) ,or the Windows Store link WUP apps you can just keep them semi inactive and un pin some of them from the start menu that's about it while most other windows store WUP apps can be uninstalled including the mail client but you have to use windows power shell to uninstall the mail client *all the way .

That being said the Groove Music player (what WMP should have been from the get ) and the Mail client ,Photos ,Calendar, Calc , and MS Money, MS Sports ,Photos and MS News live tile apps from the Windows store free (which you can turn off the live tile feature in ) and Connect are real are decent as WUP apps go.

I use them and if they bog down your PC you needed a new one or a better one and some bandwidth for the live tiles in 2012 anyway and you can otherwise populate the rest of the start menu window with shortcuts like I did ☺
