Top eSports star retires due to wrist injury at the age of 22

I believe with the continuous rise in popularity of competitive gaming, deals with ESPN, Google talking of opening up a E-sports section of YouTube, Amazon buying out Twitch.tv to get into the game streaming business, sponsorships from Intel, Nvidia, Hyper-X, Red Bull, etc., and the 7-figure salaries of the best professional gamers -- a good portion of nay-sayers that invalidate professional gaming will change their tone, given the current rate of growth continues.

I'm all a fan of the 'old ways' - but if one takes into account the year-by-year growth of the pro gaming environment, and it continues to grow the way it has... The scene will speak for itself.

I don't believe professional gaming is a sport, it's an e-Sport. The differences between these categories in respect to validity in society may very well catch up with the times. Doesn't matter how old you are, that's just a bitter excuse for a potshot at something one doesn't agree with.

If curling is considered a sport so should video games.

This! Seriously, I was about falling off my chair the first time I saw curling in the Winter Olympics. I am sure almost any activity gets pretty intense at its highest level, as the author suggests. It is just such a funny thing to watch.

I wonder why it's called eSports to begin with. What ever happened to calling it gaming, albeit a specialized form of gaming? Poker would be a game that's also not really a sport but a very competitive game nonetheless.

A collapsed lung?!! From what? The impression is given that it is from "e-sporting." If so, what in hades is he doing with his computer during these e-sporting events?

"If you don’t believe eSports should be classified as a real sport, perhaps this story will change your mind."

No. Not by a long shot. If overuse injuries validate e-sports as a legitimate sport, typists and musicians should be on ESPN too.

It's not even a legit injury. It's caused by doing things improperly. You can use a mouse 18hrs a day since age 10 till well at least 34.. (don't have it yet).. There's proper usage and proper exercises that can go hand and hand with basic weight lifting.

And why does it matter if it's classified as a sport?

Sport: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Since they are actually moving around, it could be a sport. Golf is a sport. Curling is a Sport. I'm trying to think of minimal movement sports. Every sport is a mixture of mental and physical. If moving a mouse around, pressing keys, using strategy and skill in a competitive manner is enough... then its a skill.

I think a greater argument might be if it should count as a pro sport. The pool of possible applicants is much greater than that of other sports, imo. As men can play with/against women. I believe the game needs to be more difficult to play to be a pro-sport. example. I don't think a little league team should ever be able to beat the Yankees (noob vs pro, not young vs old). In a computer game this isn't 100%. A noob could defeat a pro, the chances might be small, but its possible.

Let's get real. There is no such thing as eSport. eS is just euphemism coined for lame entities to justify theirs inability to do something productive with his/her life.

Most likely it was "Spontaneous Pneumothorax". Spontaneous means there is no traumatic injury to the chest or lung. Primary spontaneous pneumothorax occurs in people without lung disease. It occurs most often in tall, thin, young people. It can happen at anytime. I have had it happen twice in one year with the same lung. It is an extreme amount of pain (especially if they treat it with Chemical Pleurodesis - which is what I had done the second time). So it could not have been associated with the eSports.

Well some of them are rich and travel round the world fulfilling a dream , while you moan about it on a forum . Making a living doing something you enjoy is one of the goals in life.

Gaming should be considered as sport in my opinion. That guy really played so much that he can't make money anymore. Poor guy

"Gaming should be considered as sport in my opinion. That guy really played so much that he can't make money anymore. Poor guy"

So if I click my mouse 100000 times without stopping and injure my hand, wrist, or whatever should that deem mouse clicking a sport because I clicked my mouse so much? No?

What if I had to do click my mouse all those times before someone else did? Putting a sort of competition in the mix? Now is it a sport?

Or even better, what if I coined some term to make it seem like a real sport? Like Vsports. Virtual Sports. Now there's a sense of purpose to it. Now that the term "sport" has been thrown into what is really just a competition it makes it seem more serious, so more people will take it seriously. Now replace mouses with VIDEO games.
