Solved Toshiba laptop running extremely slow

Thank you for all the help.

Laptop is running a lot smoother than previously. CPU usage has decreased dramatically and there are no 'unknown' applications running.

Regarding the CD drive, I tried all of your steps.
DVDs are still not recognised at all. Tried a couple.
Audio CDs are recognised and look like they are going to play in WMP but it just stays on Track 1 at 00:01.
Tried to burn a CD and it started but ok but got stuck on 68% and froze.

Not recognized in Windows Explorer, or by WMP?

Try different player, like Irfanview: http://www.irfanview.com/

There is also a chance, that your drive is on its way out. How old is it?

CD Drive still not working

DVDs are not recognised in My Computer. It's as if there is no disk inside. Tried playing on Windows Media Player but doesn't even register.

Tried Irfanview. Same problem.

Used Windows Media Player to burn CD.

I've had this laptop about 4-5 years.
