Toshiba laptop video issues

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 laptop which will boot up and run fine for a few minutes when suddenly the screen goes to a strange pattern (it changes to differenent ones each time) and I am unable to do anything but shut down the laptop. I initially thought it was overheating but the fan seems to be working fine, however I do have to leave it a few minutes before I am able to reboot it (otherwise nothing happens when I try to power up). Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I suspect it may be the video adapter which is no doubt part of the mobo. Thanks for any help.

It is overheating. Is it an ATI video card in there? If yes then that's a typical flaw.

If the lappy is under warranty then send it to be repaired.
