Trouble booting up

I am having trouble booting up my PC. The following is the trouble I am having and the steps I took to attempt remedying the problem.

I turned the computer on last night and it booted up normally. I get the the welcome screen and put in my password. Once I did that, my screen went white. No icons, no mouse pointer. I initially thought it might have been a problem with the video card (Nvidia GTX280). So, I cut the power to the machine and let it sit a bit.

I then turned the machine back on and attempted to boot in safe mode. That wasn't a problem, as it booted up fine in safe mode. I did a system recovery back to the earliest date possible. The computer did the system restore and rebooted itself. The computer then restarted, but now it wont even go to the boot menu. All I get is a black screen with a mouse pointer on it.

That is where I stand now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
