Trouble Updating Bios for higher cpu support

  1. Hi all,
Here's my problem. I have a Asus A7A266 that was running an Athlon 900Mhz.
That cpu is now burned, and I have a functional XP2400+. My problem is, the mobo has an old bios (1006) and according to Asus, only the new bios 1012 supports the 2400+ cpu. I tried running the XP2400 at the highest setting possible allowed by the old bios 133/33 with a 12.5X. The computer hangs. So then I tried running at 100 and it still hangs.
Am I really going to need a cpu supported by the old bios in order to update it?
    Any idea is greatly appreciated.
