Twitter has introduced a new feature for Android and iOS users that will provide them with a curated list of interesting and relevant accounts to follow. The ‘Connect’ tab also lets people discover twitter friends and family by syncing contacts from a device’s address book.

Twitter bases its recommendations on factors such as current followers, previously liked tweets, popular accounts in a user’s local area, world events, and more. Twitter will also explain why it has made each recommendation and plans to continue refining the algorithm to improve the suggestions.

While both the ‘recommended accounts’ and ‘find friends’ options were previously available, Twitter has pointed out that the features are now more accessible. Moreover, the alert that informs users whenever a contact in their address book creates an account will remain.

"Finding new accounts to follow used to require jumping through a few hoops and a dash of luck," The company said in a blog post. "Starting today, you'll see a detailed list of people and accounts we think you'll enjoy following, all easily accessible in one place."

In addition to the introduction of the new Connect tab, Twitter has launched a complete overhaul of its mobile website.

Quite how much of a difference the Connect tab makes to the overall Twitter experience remains to be seen, but it definitely looks to have improved things. It’s likely that it will eventually make its way to the web version.

Twitter’s shares hit an all-time low of $13.90 yesterday, as the company continues to look at ways of attracting much-needed new followers.
