If you’ve ever overdosed on coffee, then you’ll know the sickly, shaky feeling that appears when you drink too much. So imagine how a pair of students felt after they consumed the caffeine equivalent of 300 cups in a single dose during a sports experiment at their University.

The two 20-year-olds - Alex Rossetto and Luke Parkin – were taking part in a practical exercise at Northumbria University, which is in Newcastle, UK, back in March 2015.

The experiment was meant to test caffeine’s effects during exercise. A powdered version of the stimulant was mixed with orange juice for the students to consume, but instead of receiving 306mg, Rossetto ingested 30.7g of caffeine, while Parkin took 32g instead of 320mg. The overdose was the result of a misplaced decimal point when calculating the correct amount for height and weight, which was reportedly done on a cellphone.

That amount of caffeine is almost twice the recognized lethal dose – there have been reported deaths after consumption of just 18g. The students instantly suffered blurred vision, dizziness, shaking, and rapid heartbeat. They were rushed to hospital in a “potentially life-threatening condition” and had to undergo dialysis.

As reported by the Sunderland Echo, prosecutors at Newcastle Crown Court said: “there was no suitable and sufficient risk assessment, inadequate supervisor, inadequate checks and failure to follow rudimentary health and safety legislation."

Both men have made a full physical recovery and were able to continue with their studies, though they suffered months of side effects following their ordeal, including short-term memory loss by Rossetto.

The University said that "all those involved are deeply sorry and genuinely sorry.” It was fined £400,000 (just over $500,000).

Permalink to story.

A misplaced decimal point? These are supposed to be varsity students, not primary school students. How the hell did they pass the entrance exams anyway?

And where did this money go? Did the 2 students see any of it?

My main takeaway - the decimal calculation was done on a cell phone. As a professor in a public institution, seeing how young kids are these days, I'm not surprised at all.

That was a really dangerous and stupid test, even with the correct dose they planned without a full battery of tests it could have brought a lot of harm into the kids.

It's a fine, not a lawsuit nor compensation.

Sad that the university is being blamed. This time we live in where nokne has any responsibility its always someone else's fault. These students did this to themselves.. So now universities will have to carry accidental overdose insurance? Rediculous..

A misplaced decimal isn't the story here. The story is that someone handling supplements/drugs didn't know that 32g of caffeine was lethal. This error should have been caught the moment the units became grams. Literally anybody in the fitness industry would have caught this error.

no, Insurance will not cover federal fines.

Also, it's not exactly blame. Even though the students should have been more careful (and they really should have been), the courts decided that the university was negligent for their part of the mistake, which could have led to the students death.

So, have y'all read additional stories on this, or just assuming? captaincranky says they are athletes, but all I see is they were exercising as part of this experiment. This article implies they were given the mixture to drink, but multiple people are saying they mixed it themselves?

The students are lucky to be alive and no they didn't see any of it.

That fine went straight to the government.

These are athletes, they don't really get entrance exams, let alone have to pass one.
Of course, how silly of me to forget that it works like that over there. Who needs a bit of brains when a lot of brawn can overcome that slight deficiency. Over here we can can buy our honours degrees from the street vendors these days. For a masters degree, we have have to contact the street vendors Nigerian supplier directly. They like to try make lives real simple, no brains or brawn required, just a little bit of green.

I think I know the supplier, he might live down the street from me... :D It would seem Africa has Nigerians to spare for export these days.

Oh well, back on topic. Let's spell, "affaleetz, A-FF-A-L-EE-T-Z, affaleetz".
