Unknown Worlds, the creative minds behind Natural Selection 2, are set to take on their next project, dubbed Subnautica. This ambitious venture is the developer's attempt to mesh together elements of exploration, role playing, cinematic, and sandbox games, something that Unknown Worlds feels has not been done yet. This proposed “genre” is certainly not something we see in the modern age of games, and it is not something that is easily classified by the simple genres we use on a day to day basis.

According to the Subnautiaca mini-site, the title “aims to elicit a feeling of experiencing the unknown.” The Myst series has done a good job in the past capturing this type of gameplay by providing players with imaginative realms to explore, but never has it done anything pertaining to a sandbox world, or used RPG overtones. We don't yet have a clear picture on what to expect from Subnautica, but the mini-site states this concerning gameplay:

“The underwater environment will invite you to construct submarines and develop your equipment in order to reach its far flung and diverse corners. Decisions you make about vessel layout, capabilities and structure will affect your ability to navigate hazards and enter the domains of creatures; the likes of which your imagination has never conceived of. “

This is definitely a title you'll want to keep your eyes on, and if Unknown Worlds manages to cram all of its proposed elements into the game, we could see the creation of an entirely new genre. If you're already curious for more, head on over to the Media section of the website, where you can download wallpapers and hear some of the early versions of music proposed for the game's soundtrack.
