Sorry to ask a stupid question but the pile of hard drives is building up.

When drives were small they lasted forever, I now have 4 drives that have become problematic and I did not want to dump until I have explored all options.

2 became buggy, causing chkdsk to run on every boot, 2 I formatted under acronis home 10, no all cannot be seen when plugged in in a usb holder or direct into the pc all are SATA.

Is there some prog that can probe them. 2 were fine until formatted.

Cheers

The hard drives manufacturers have diagnostic software available as free downloads. Google for these. SMART status must be checked on all suspect hard drives. If a drive fails the SMART status, it is to be considered bad or unreliable, regardless of platter or bad sector errors
