Post Windows Repair log which is located in the following folder:
64-bit systems - C:\Program Files (x86)\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs
32-bit systems - C:\Program Files\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs

Check the issue when done.

I downloaded the portable file, into a desktop folder, unzipped it and am working from there now ... stay tuned

We're 50% through the Administrator System File Check.

When computer went into chkdsk, I had to open another Tweaking again. I have 2 Tweaking icons down in the task bar ... is that going to be a problem?

I checked for the issue on the one desktop file that wasn't working right. The issue is NOT solved.

I checked for the issue after I wrote this ... the repair log is at the end.

Finally!!!!

Sorry if the following is a bit long, but I want you to know I learned a lot from you and your expert help during all of this. I can't thank you enough for all the hard work and putting up with this old fool for the last week or so.

I figured I had better start over since my last post ... I wanted to do it right.

Hitting the START button DID seem to cause some problems. I think I saved a lot of time and anguish going back and starting over. I ran the whole set of your instructions from start to finish the second time I did it.

This stuff was in chkdsk_full_log )I randomly selected some suspicious looking stuff for you to see):

----------------------------------------------------
C:\>chkdsk C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
The volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk
might report errors when no corruption is present.

WARNING! F parameter not specified.

----------------------------------------------------

I had a long look at most of the notepad files after the scan. I wanted to have some idea of the processes involved. Here's what one Notepad file had to say about Permissions.

----------------------------
In Reset File Permissions:

The repair will grant administrators, system, users and everyone full rights to every file on the selected drives.

This will only ADD the permissions, it will not remove current permissions or the owner of a file.

When certain files lose their proper permissions, then lots of problems can happen, such as not being able to install windows updates, program errors, services failing and so on.
----------------------------

I changed a few of my files owner parameters trying to fix things when they started going bad a few months ago. I was successful sometimes and not at other times. I think I'll learn the process so I know what to do if/when the problem comes up again.

...YOU MUST RESTART YOUR SYSTEM...

Hi Broni,

Thank you for trying to fix this for me.

ISSUES FOR FOLDER ABC

I have a folder (ABC) on my desktop. It contains 3 folders and 5 Notepad text files. One of the Notepad text files (XYZ) presents problems.

I can open ABC with:

double click
or
right click --> open

I can open any folder and all but one Notepad (XYZ) the same way.

I can click and drag ABC to a different position on my desktop.

If I right click ABC --> copy

then right click --> paste (in a different position on my desktop):

I get an error message:

FILE ACCESS DENIED
"You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file (error msg names Notepad file XYZ and gives some XYZ properties)"

There are 3 option buttons at the bottom of this error msg:
Continue Skip Cancel

No matter which option I choose, the file still copies and pastes BUT the new copy does not contain XYZ.

Continue
- gives error msg --- FILE ACCESS DENIED --- You need permission to perform this action -- You require permission from Dennis-PC\Dennis to make changes to this file (gives XYZ filename and some properties)
- 2 button options:
TRY AGAIN CANCEL
- still pastes ABC, but without XYZ

Skip
- error msg disappears
- pastes ABC, but without XYZ

Cancel
- error msg disappears
- pastes ABC, but without XYZ

--------------------------------------------

ISSUES FOR NOTEPAD FILE XYZ

Assume desktop folder ABC is open.

double click XYZ
- gives a small error msg box, titled Notepad
- Access is denied.
- one button (OK)
- also gives a grayed out empty Notepad (untitled) in the background
- if I click OK, I can type into and save this new untitled Notepad

right click --> open XYZ
- same as above

I can't do any of the following to XYZ:

- rename
- click and drag
- delete

I can create a XYZ shortcut inside ABC, but clicking on the shortcut just reproduces all the results as if I was trying to do stuff to XYZ

I could keep writing these if-then and cause-effects, but I think it could go on forever. I don't even want to try to write out all the properties and tabs unless you tell me to do that.

If you want to try to follow this through with me (thank you!), then you'll have to tell me to do specific things.

Would you consider doing a remote takeover of my computer so you can try things? I'm not sure how that process works, but I think Shaw did it once before to solve some connectivity issues.

Dennis

That worked ... sort of.

The registry hack added the option to the right click menu.

I went back into desktop folder ABC and right clicked Notepad file XYZ

The drop down menu showed the new hack. I clicked it.

I double clicked XYZ to open it but was given the same "ACCESS DENIED" error msg with the grayed out blank new Notepad file in the back ground.

I exited, then right clicked XYZ, copied, then right clicked empty space in folder ABC, and selected paste. Same error msg

"FILE ACCESS DENIED".
You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file

and the same 3 buttons:
CONTINUE SKIP CANCEL

clicking on SKIP and CANCEL just exited with no action.

However, clicking on CONTINUE made the error msg box disappear and a copy of XYZ was now in my ABC folder.

I double clicked on the copy of XYZ

All the expected content was there and I could do whatever I wanted to the file and content.

I right clicked on XYZ and clicked DELETE. It disappeared.

I went into Recycle bin and restored it to ABC folder.

I double clicked XYZ with the same ACCESS DENIED error msg. I tried this to see if moving it into and out of the recycle bin had any effect

Okay ... now at least I've discovered I can easily make a copy of an Access Denied file, rename it, and delete the bad file.

I'm just wondering why the hack didn't make this a one-click fix?

Broni, if I know you at all through everything we've done in the past days, it's that you also wonder what is causing this.

If you want to continue this discussion, that's just fine with me. To be honest, I'm a little reluctant to say :Goodbye"!!! LOL

I have question:

If ever I do a registry fix and return to default setting process, will I have to re-install this hack again?

Dennis

There's a lot of stuff on that site. I know I don't have enough comp knowledge to understand it all. Here's a few things for you to know first:

I'm not worried about any of the items that will be reset to default.

I bought a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1, but don't know where the disk is. I moved a few months ago and it's in a box somewhere. These instructions look like I'll need it. I'll have to look for it if I need it.

Please reply to this before I go any further.

Dennis

If you read that page carefully it'll show you how to create your own Windows DVD.
Instructions are very clear and not that complicated once you read them slowly.
You can do it, no problem.

I love how you empower me and give me Superman powers I never knew I had.

I don't have a blank DVD (I've never made a CD or DVD in my life!!!).

I DO have a USB flash 8 gig that I can make empty. Will that be big enough?

Is this the part you're talking about?:

When I bought my laptop, I also bought Office Home & Student 2010 and Windows 7 Home Premium.

Funny, as I was looking for the Win 7 disk, I found the Office 2010 disk, 3 Acer recovery disks, and another Acer disk (Applications & Drivers) the salesman gave me. The 4 Acer disks have numbers in felt pen (5742-6602) written on them. Is it possible I never had the Win 7 disk and it's actually on those disks?

Windows XP was the last Windows version where you were actually getting Windows disk.
No more since then.
Acer recovery disks won't do as they will wipe everything out and restore everything to factory settings.
Is this the part you're talking about?:

Yes.

NOT THAT COMPLICATED????!!!!!!!

I can assure you it was VERY complicated ... 4 different websites and about 80 decisions later, my USB is almost finished.

I just hope I haven't made any mistakes.

Was this a Broni test to try to recruit me?? LOL

I finally got you to smile!!!!

I have my USB all ready to go. I'm about to follow the steps in Repair Install.

I'll be disabling MSE. Is that considered a 3rd party security program?
