US inventor's folding paper bike helmet wins James Dyson award

I don't get the "eco" part of this. My bicycle helmets are decades old and dinged up. Never a need to toss them. This one has limited use and needs to be replaced, as it gets abused. More materials, more disposal and more waste.

An interesting idea? Yes. Eco? Hardly.

They are meant for things like those bike shares in large cities. They offer the bike, but expect people to bring their own helmet. Many have worked out deals with local bike shops, you drop by with a slip and they rent you a helmet for a cheap price - and then you can drop it off at any other participating shop. But You still need to ride to a bike shop to get it, and so many don't even bother.

This way, they can just attach a vending machine right next to bike share machine, and then sell disposable helmets.
