USB Causes Computer to Freeze

I have XP Professional installed with McAfee Anti Virus + Zone Alarm (Free Edition) When I plug in my memory stick into any of the USB ports (5),the system freezes and I have to restart the PC any ideas as to what is causing this. The memory stick works on any other computer I try. It was working up until about 5 weeks ago and and have not used the stick since Uni stopped, but I now require the use of the stick again as Uni starts back soon

Uninstall the USB key drivers and re-install them and try again.

That would be my first step.

How exactly would I uninstall the USBs and reinstall them again

Perhaps I should add that when I start the computer up or when I log off and someone else logs on then the following message appears in a grey message alert box "The requested control is not valid for this Service" (and in the grey box the word) ControlService OK. Could this have anything to do with my problem with the USBs or not
