USB devices

i have been reading that USB devices can be unplugged whenever wanted. but then why does windows xp have this icon in the systems tray: Safey Remove Hardware. i follow it but is it really needed for unplugging usb devices like my flash memory drive?

That icon is simply there if you use USB-storagedevices.
You better use that function if you just completed any datatransfer to the device. So that the buffer used to write the data to the device can be flushed, so the risk on dataloss while disconnecting is prevented.
