USB Hard Drive

I have a 80 gb external usb hard drive made by iogear. I would plug the hard drive in to my computer and it would automatically install the drive. But recently I have had to restart the computer with the device plugged in in order form it to be seen on my computer. When I plug the device in while the computer is up and running it makes the sound for a new device detected but it never gets installed. So if anyone has any info on this I would love to hear because this is getting annoying

do you unmount the drive before removing it?

hot-swapping is bad for your drive and can mess with the OS recognizing it.

You know, I have a printer installed via USB and every time when I restart my PC it detects new device and starts installing it. It's really annoying but I can't find the solution too...

To tell you the truth I don't unmount it. SO basically you are saying to reinstall windows and then every time I plug in the drive unmount it before I am done?
