Use Media Center's IR receiver for cellphone

My computer came with a remote and infrared receiver for Media Center. Does anyone know if it would be possible to use the IR receiver for things such as the infrared connection on my cellphone? I got my cellphone to connect to my old laptop's infrared and was able to send and receive files between them. I don't want to have to buy some $80 cable that I'll probably only use once or twice, so if anyone could help me I'd really appreciate it.
