Veritas - backup failed - or did it?

Running Veritas Backup Exec on a W2k Server.

I am getting a failed status on the job log. It appears that the backup was completed ok, because the job log reports the correct number of bytes, files and directories were backed up. Also I did a test restore of a couple of files and successfuly retrieved them.

The job log says:
Storage device "HP 1" reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported:
The device is not ready.

I think it is getting this error after the backup is done, but while trying to verify the job.

I don't know what could have changed to cause this error. It has been working everyday for many months, but the last three days I get this same error.
Can anyone tell me what might be the problem?

Thanks,
Bill

Looked at that cert, but I'm not running remote backup. Searched veritas support and found some similar error messages. Said to check event viewer to see if I was getting error 15 - tape drive not responding. That wasn't it either.

Could it be something as simple as tape drive needing cleaning? I don't know if this drive has ever had a cleaning. I ordered a cleaning cartridge.

Yes, it may be a dirty drive or an aging tape. What sort of tapes do you use?
