Very slow computer...question

This may be dumb question but my friend has an old desktop, maybe ten years old, which is extremely slow. I am going to go through it and check for viruses using one of my old posts. My question at this time is: He has over 5000 photographs on the computer. Could this be the reason it is slow? Should I try taking them off and putting them on an external hard drive and delete them from the computer? Might that be helpful?

YES! if you can... The computer is probably not worth a whole lot of work at this point

Create a few subdirectories and move pictures into them
