Video problem that ends all programs and goes to desktop

I have windows xp home edition. Anytime I try to view a video or a clip the message pops up saying Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. I don't have a clue on how to solve this issue. If anyone can help- i would glady appreciate it.

reinstall windows, it sounds like something got currupted. Don't worry, crap like that tends to happen. oh and make sure you have your cd key at hand.

I think the reinstall option is bit premature.Does it happen with different media players or just one ?If it`s one try reinstalling it.Try another better browser- http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ or check out this- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293623 or this- http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378
