Prominent technology website All Things Digital shut down shop on December 31. The site, which became an extension of the D conference first held more than a decade ago, launched in April 2007 and has played host to nearly 40,000 posts since.

On January 2, the journalists will launch a brand new site with a whole new suite of conferences. Tentatively known as Re/code with the tagline Re/fresh, Re/think, Re/imagine, the site will be run as an independent company with its own set of investors and partners.

The closing of All Things Digital isn’t a total shocker as it was revealed back in September that the site and Wall Street Journal parent company Dow Jones decided not to renew their contract. That agreement was set to expire at the end of 2013 and left the site in a state of limbo as they tried to find a media partner or buyer.

At the time, it was rumored that Bloomberg, Coden Nast and NBCUniversal were potential buyers or partners but none of those deals ultimately panned out.

As of writing, the All Things Digital website now redirects to the Wall Street Journal’s technology department.

The full launch of Re/code is expected at midnight ET on January 2. No word yet on exactly what we can expect from the site but I imagine it won’t deviate too far from what we saw out of All Things Digital. And with the Consumer Electronics Show just around the corner, now is as good a time as any to launch a new tech brand.
