Weekend Open Forum: Do you ever pre-order video games?

I've preodered many titles. Some were not what I expected. All my pre orders tough came with a disccount. It's common here in Brazil. Let me see:

1- Mafia 2 (not what I expected)
2- BF 3
3- Tomb Raider (reboot)
4- BF 4 (that was a huge let down)
5- Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor
6- Witcher 3 (need to know what will happen about the Wild Hunt)

I'll emphasize the fact that in Brazil if you look hard, some stores give you 30% disccount on pre ordering. This make pre ordering more akin to what is right. I'm the one taking a risk.

Diablo 3 Preordered, Also RoS. Knew I would play it have been burned several times over though. Off the top of my head, World of Warcrap, Aion, Dc Universe, City of Heroes (Actually Enjoyed) City of Villains, Eve, Battlefield 3...probably more than that but those for the most part are the ones that I can think of, rather just wait until they are out for a bit so I know(hope) that their crappy bugs are fixed. Depending on the title I might preorder it, but will I any more? Only time will tell...

I haven't pre-ordered a game since Crysis 2 personally, friends and family have pre-ordered me games though for my birthday/Christmas etc...

Crysis 2 was a massive let down so I've forced myself not to pre-order any more HOWEVER.

I recently pre-ordered a game because I've loved the developers previous work and I played the beta over 40 hours! 3 maxed out characters and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.

Of course I am talking about Destiny, I even went all out and got the Ghost Edition, why? I properly lost myself in their world, I will get my monies worth and it's an actual special edition, they have genuinely made only a certain amount. I will also be able to have a special Ghost in game and sparrow which to me, considering how much I plan on playing this game with friends and randomers alike, I was happy to pay for, and since it's genuinely limited at least it's value will stay (I've seen Ghost editions going for £200+ on ebay already!)

I do not understand the mentality of pre ordering a game.
Everyone moans about EA and nickel and diming people. And yet its ok to pre order a title, that needs a 32gb patch in the first week, and has 30 bits of DLC.
It's ok to be tempted by a shiny outfit so you can look the campest on the battlefield.
And it's ok that all content will be included free in the half price GOTY edition that will then be practically free in a sale.
And I get there are is a lot of overheads, they have to spend a small fortune into advertising, to let you know, that everyone is switching to the next call of duty clone. But half the time it is a clone, it is sub par, and it isnt worth your cash.

Maybe. But a vocal minority of gamers have forgotten that twenty years ago you got a lot less game for your dollar. Even classics like Super Metroid cost $50 (in 1994 dollars even) and could be completed in a handful of hours. However, people bought far fewer games then, and played them more. Now games on the average contain far more content, yet there is this entitled attitude that they're not worth the asking price. Maybe, instead of playing dozens of games per year, people should buy fewer and appreciate them more.

First of all, I consider early access games the same as a pre-order. That said, my opinion on the matter would be this: wether or not you pre-order games you are determining the future behavior of the market. If paying money for unfinished or otherwise incomplete work becomes regular practice, then developers will realize this and make it more and more common practice. They will begin begin big, promising projects with lots of eye candy screen shots and gladly take your money only to produce worse and worse product. Because human nature is to push the boundaries as far as they will go and then break them. Paying for a finished product that has been quality controlled is not only a better investment but is a much safer way to conserve the game software market and keep developers in check. Otherwise you might as well just make like a Fry meme and yell to them "Take all of my money!" I just hope the concept doesn't flood into other markets. Can you imagine if housing contractors were using 'early access' sales practices? They would give you a little disclaimer saying you will agree to accept the home as-is for a below regular price. So you shell out $50,000 and about half way through pouring the foundation and putting up the frame the contractor just walks away.
Personally, all the games I have pitched in for I only paid what I thought the as-is state of the game was worth. But most often I would rather them just finish their work before they get paid--the way money is supposed to work.

I only pre-order a game if I know it's one that I truly want. I can also put as much $$ down when pe-ordering from gamestop as I want and pay the rest when I pick it up.

I pre-order all the time for my son because he's always playing the latest games, but I just pre-order from Amazon.

If it's a big game that I want to play on day one or it's a collector's set that I'm interested in then yes, I preorder. Otherwise, I can wait for a game. I just barely got Injustice and Batman: Arkham Origins for $8 each.
