open forum ram wof memory hardware computer pc

Memory is a key component in any computer and without a sufficient amount on tap, the entire system will feel sluggish regardless of what other beefy hardware you might be running.

The amount of RAM you’ll need for a typical desktop or notebook will largely be dictated by what sort of activities you plan to do with it. Personally, I wouldn’t dare build a system with any less than 8GB of memory and even that is pushing it if you’re looking to stay ahead of the curve.

With this week’s open forum, we want to know how much RAM populates your main PC. Let us know in the comments below!

8GB and really I find that's not enough, especially when I just have so much open. Looking to either swap mobo/cpu and go 16GB, when Skylake drops maybe or do a 16GB upgrade on this board. Either way it's going to be interesting ;)

I made the jump to 16GB a year or two ago, and when I eventually go 5820k (and gift this 4690k to my significant other) I'll probably go 16GB again if only because I'll have room for a second -6GH kit (for 32GB), for future-proofing purposes.

8GB

And if 8GB wasn't enough I do believe my machine would crash, because I have my Pagefile turned off. Until I run into problems with lack of memory, I'm not worried about having more.

4GB here. It's kinda more than enough for my daily tasks and gaming, but an upgrade to 8GB is necessary for heavy software compiling (with Link Time Optimization) and highpoly modeling in Blender without running out of memory.

12GB on my box...I'm probably going to up it, every I run photoshop for over an hour, my hard drive crunches & crunches after I shut it down.

16gb, I usually have a bunch of stuff running at once. It's standard for me to be listening to music via media center, have 1/2 a dozen chrome windows open, and be processing a hundred RAW files. I shoot weddings so sometimes I'm batch processing 1000-1500 RAW files with dxo taking my cpu's 4 cores to 100% for 15hrs straight. I don't recall mem usage going much beyond 6gb or so, but I have had adobe elements tell me I'm out if ram a few times, so I don't know what to make of that.

16GB. Funny how it wasn't that long ago if you had more than 4GB the "experts" were tell you it was wasted memory.

16 on my gaming rig. More than enough for my needs at the moment but have been looking at getting another 16, with all of the deals on memory.

16 on my laptop as well, but I often need to run virtual machines on it for work.

16 on my newest build. I never needed more than 8 on my last build, but usage often passed 6 gb, so I figured I'd just get 16 and never need to mess with a possible upgrade in the future.
