What do you think of No Man's Sky?

Few games in recent memory have been as hyped as No Man’s Sky. Some people found the promise of exploring a universe filled with 18 quintillion planets so exciting that they threatened to kill developer Sean Murray when the game was delayed.

It’s been available on the PlayStation 4 since Tuesday and, by the time you read this, it will finally be out on PC. As is often the case with overhyped titles, several early reviews claim it doesn’t live up to expectations: it’s currently got a Metacritic score of 69.

The most common complaint seems to be that while it may be technically amazing and contain some great elements, the core gameplay loop gets repetitive once the initial wow factor wears off. Even Murray himself says it’s not for everyone and he expects it to be “divisive.”

But there are those that love the game. Fans say it can take many hours to appreciate NMS fully and that it’s a relaxing, rewarding experience. They also argue that new patches and content, such as the ability to build bases and space stations, will improve it immensely.

For this Weekend Open Forum, we want to know your thoughts on No Man’s Sky. Do you intend to purchase the PC version? Have you tried it on the PS4, and if so, what do you think? Are you going to wait to see if updates improve the game before splashing out? Or is it totally overhyped and not worth the money? Whatever your thoughts, do let us know.

Update: It appears that a number of performance issues are affecting the PC version of No Man's Sky, including FPS drops, screen tearing, and crashes. The problems have made it unplayable for many people, even on rigs with powerful hardware. At the moment, just 40 percent of its Steam reviews are positive. For those who were unsure about purchasing the game, could this prove the deciding factor?

I got it for PS4. Played it for a couple of hours. Realised what an uninspiringly repetitive grind it is. Even the flora looked the same on different plants. Doubt I'll play much of it again.

I watched the Kotaku one hour video then some of Angry Joe's Twitch stream and I wasn't impressed with any of it, for the same reasons that have been said already by people that have played it.

Crashes
PS2-like graphics
Repetition
Tedious inventory management
Not enough variety in the wildlife

I'm getting 35 fps @ 1080p with everything set to high on an fx8350 @ 4.2 ghz and a gtx970... I was hoping for better frames then that... after starting the game, I spent the first 20 minutes trying to figure out what the heck I was doing then 40 minutes trying to fix the ship, after that I got to the next planet and found a cave that led down to a huge cavern system full of water, and I spent 40 minutes trying to find the way out again. And after finally finding my ship again I found a base, saved the game and quit... I will be playing it again tomorrow. Its not great but it has got me wanting to give it another try, as the game stands so far.

I'm getting a good 30 minimum (60+ average) with a 8320e + 970. Feels like the boring Crashlands I wanted on my PC but couldn't get for my mobile.

I gave it a shot. It's not a game for me. I thought the game was very repetitive, boring, and the randomly generated creatures are just silly. I think I'd rather play eve. I got a refund from STEAM.

Mine is stuck on "initializing".... Got fed up... Will try again tomorrow, or will be getting my money back.

Edit: just googled and apparently I needed to press a key.... Will try again later :)

It's, currently, absolute garbage. The game crashes on about 80% of every warp to another system, crashes on about 40% of loads from the ps4 OS, and the control of the ship is way too automated for my liking. I'd love a little more control of the ship. In its current state, the game is almost unplayable on my console with all the crashes. I took it back today.

Oh, and the procedurally generated graphics look pretty terrible now that I've seen them in person, and not on youtube.

Will check it out once the PC version has been fixed. Until then I'll stick with Elite Dangerous. From what I've seen from streams, including Angry Joe's stream, the game shows potential. Whether it lives up to it is another matter.

This game sux donkey dickz. No way, I can't believe this game really was a bunch of hype. I'm sad, but spend half a day just trying to figure out the way mix this and that and you are always low or out of something that is not or extremely rare on the planet you are on. To increase the games length they simply removed the instruction booklet.....ya really:(

Looks like every planet is the same boring wasteland. Other than that a lot of people are complaining about technical issues.

Sterile - void of variety, and no sense of mystery so why bother exploring? Everything thing is 'different' in the exact same way; so after visiting planet #3 you realize that it's all as much as much. There is nothing to see - just do your 'chores' and move along... Is that the extent of this game? Those chores are boring, repetitive unnecessary grinding that puts up a barrier to the 'task' of exploration.

Why would anyone do this? You can't really accumulate things of much note or leave your mark in this universe so there is nothing to be ambitious about - there is simply no payoff for playing. A waste of time and my money!

Why do people still buy games or order it release date.
They are always buggy as hell and in need of several patches.
Or your SLi'd machine is getting low fps. Ditch a card genius.
Or it sucks. Omgrlyitwasalljusthypeomgomg...
The same stories we here time and time again yet no one learns.
Games are worth £10 peeps. No more. And £1 if on EAs origin.
I bet most people here who bought this game on ps4 have played skyrim on pc and yet ordered the ps4 remaster at full price to play the same damn game again. Oh the logic.

I guess novelty. If you wait a couple of weeks/months to buy a game it's novelty wears off and then it's not even worth buying. I would value games more than that but $60 is quite expensive and rarely any game is worth that much. People like getting screwed.

Too expensive for a indie game with 10h or so of entertainment. Sony saw the hype and decided to cash in, but game is like worth 30$ on release and 20$ on sale. Wouldn't be surprised if sony made them cut some content and release it later as dlc so maybe we will get more variety on planets.
Shame for the guy who bitched about them using he's "super" formula, the game looks bland, boring and repetitive and if it was because of his formula no body want's to use it ever again.

Will Wright just needs to make another Spore game that improves upon the first and it would make this game look like the bargain bin trash that it is.

This is why I stopped pre-ordering years ago...

Is it a good game? I'll let you know in 6 months when it's finally finished.
I am going to wait as well - I don't care how professional are the reviewers, it never matches my expectations and I am fairly reasonable (I.e. it should work out of the box, should not be buggy, experience should be smooth etc.). Anyway, might not be relevant but I am curios how this matches against Vladimir Romanyuk's Space Engine. Sure, No Man's Sky is to be superior, but I was wondering about a comparison concerning their common features (exploration, planet atmospheres, maybe even physical accuracy in modelling various planets).

It looks like it has potential. But it also looks like the kind of game where you want the modding community and multiplayer.
I've considered getting it, but beyond grinding, it doesn't look like it has enough to warrant me spending $70+....

* I have decent hardware, so I cranked all settings to max and have it vsync'd at 60, zero problems there. No crashes, no instability, no real bugs to report so far.

* Glad there's an FOV slider, changed that to 90.

* I also use an Xbox One controller, as I find it far less fatiguing for lengthy adventure games or extended RPG play sessions.

* Have been having connectivity issues, but I'm gonna assume that's just because of the massive influx of new players putting a decent strain on the servers. Expected this.

* Storage space is a premium during gameplay, it is the sole reason for most of the feelings of anxiety while exploring. This needs to be addressed. Most adventure titles restrict your storage space at first. You quickly learn what things you need and which things you don't. Learn your crafting recipes and soon you'll know what you're looking for.

* Crafting is pretty simple once you get the hang of the recipe system.

* Trade can net you lots of units, so always sell things you don't plan on using within the next couple hours.

* Combat is decently balanced, I'd say it's about medium difficulty. I've died twice and won about 6 conflicts.

* Navigation is pleasant and easy.

* World variety is pretty incredible. Terrain, flora, fauna, resources, atmosphere...all the random mixtures create environments that you have to traverse with slightly different tactics.

* The more I play, the more of the lore I'm revealing, and this is some really fantastical stuff. Kinda freaky, but also very much a source of inspiration to continue planet-hopping. It's like staring down the rabbit hole, if the rabbit hole was a black hole with amazing and fearful wonders on the other side.

* Learning languages and interacting with aliens is cool. It's nice that you don't just magically know how to speak to every alien race that's out there. I feel like this is something that would naturally make sense in a lot of space adventure titles. This isn't Star Trek, not everyone has a universal translator.

* Lots of neat ship variety. Wacky, industrial, combat, tiny, huge. It's cool to be flying around and then BOOM ten massive ships warp in. It's also fun to kinda hang around in the space stations, waiting for new pilots to arrive, asking them to trade or just to check out the ships.

* The sense of scale is perfect. Planets and moons are absolutely massive. Flying down through an atmosphere and landing on a planet, and then looking up and seeing other planets over the horizon never gets old. Awe-inspiring. Just knowing that every little thing you see in the sky is a place you could go is daunting, but is also like a call into the wild.

Not sure about the rest of you, but I know what this game sets out to be, and it nailed it. Many of the expectations that are lofted upon Hello Games' shoulders are entirely unfair. It's a solo *exploration* title developed by a few guys that had some lovely algorithms to work with. With the amount of effort and love put into this game, and the amount of improvements likely coming over the months and years, 60 dollars will seem like nothing in the long run. I promise you that.

I'll leave you with these words:

Exploration is purely transitory and like time, inexorable. It demands that you continue marching forward because once you stop moving, you're no longer in a state of exploration; you simply just exist.

This is very much a philosophical experience, and many gamers either don't care, choose not to care, or can't understand. Sure, it has some merits and it may fall short in technical ways when comparing it to other adventure titles, but that's not the point of No Man's Sky. So, what is the point?

Look up.

Probably the same reason people go to a movie in the theaters on the release date. They've been waiting for a long time to see a particular movie, and want to be able to decide for themselves if it's a good flick or not, rather than letting some mouth breathing critic decide for them. The same applies to games in my opinion. I don't trust many critics, and I would rather spend my money to see if I think it's going to be something I'll enjoy. In this case, the NMS was a flop in my book. I took it back, and traded it for another game I've been wanting, and I couldn't be happier with the swap. No loss here.

The only people disappointed with "No Man's Sky" repetitiveness are the ones who bought into the hype of "18 Quintillion unique worlds to explore" without really understanding how procedural generation works.
Yes, you will indeed have 18 Quintillion worlds to explore, all being just slightly different from each other.
Have fun!
