Weekend Open Forum: What is your favorite set of headphones?

The difference here;

- This is a headset/phone thread
- regardless, cops come if you piss of the neighbors enough just the same way. I choose headphones for personal listening. Plus, they sound better then my 10x 6.25" + 5x1" Polk speakers with 600W Klipsch 12" sub professionally setup 5.1 home-theater setup.

The headphones sound BETTER in any case for high-fidelity private listening as they don't have to battle room acoustics and other factors. Plus they can keep the other sounds out.

I'm not sure what level of outrage I should have with this, it ranges somewhere between 0 and high :). Capt was replying to me, where I was the one that brought up cops, which WAS relevant to this thread because that is why I use my headphones sometimes.

I have a Klipsch 12" 600W sub, so I'm confused if you are making light of me or this is what you have. I'd kind of disregard this normally, but you also mentioned polk speakers. Everything in my 5.1 setup is Polk except the sub.... However, mine are not 'professionally setup', mine, if I am ambitious utilize Sony's mic and auto adjusting of the timings, but I haven't done that at my current location.

Lastly, my Beyer DT 880s were not inexpensive headphones, and they do almost nothing to keep other sounds out, that is not their design intention. Their intention was to deliver high quality sound at almost a flat frequency response curve (forgive me for not knowing the appropriate terminology). They absolutely do not make any attempt to filter out outside noise.

My original response was to the fact that was started with just 'Loudspeakers'. If that was a different author, my apologies. I usually don't miss stuff like that with my condition. In-fact if I was going for the most clarity to be had, that would be my last choice aside from a pure listening room like a studio. To get that close, you almost have to have headphones. Just real-world junk screws it all up.

However, to continue to answer your questions; I have two sets of RT55's (Wish I could get a 3rd but at this time they wouldn't be usage matched to what I have now so...) and the matching CS400 center (same thing really, god knows why it cost as much as a pair of 55's when it's just tweet in the center instead of two drivers with tweet on top...). Two 6.25" drivers and a 1" tweeter each. They were $700 each back in the day (90's) and then the sub. The audio specialists come out and use the mic and other equipment to measure the response of the room and add material to the echoing (bad) spots int he form of anything. The cheap way is simple squares of mounted carpet but it can be done far more tastefully. Other then that basically the same thing the 'mic' can do for most modern head units. Even my cheaper Yamaha and Onkyo do that now (sorry, can't stand Sony, that's another topic...). The Polk subs just don't impress, and tend to be muddy so I went with the Klipsch which was clean, actually TOO powerful for the balance, nice tonal balance, etc. However, everything can easily draw the police if I turn it up.

However, back to the headphones - I would NEVER use one that didn't filter or at least isolate outside noises. Even my rather cheap Senheiser PC350's do a good job keeping your ears isolated. That's why I prefer over the ear sets for one, not on the ear. Some in the ear work also but those are uncomfortable to me.

HOWEVER again, that said, I can't STAND Bose... UGG... I've had a few sets and... BLEH! There are other alternatives out there though. However being fully in a wheelchair now and NOT being something I would buy without a good try, it's hard to actually get out and shop when I don't have a vehicle able to get me around anymore... (Leave it to Multiple Sclerosis to @#$% up life... GRRRR!). I can't use mostly my chair in the picture. need a power chair now and that means a car that can get it around also... My house was cheaper... So I sit at home and there's only so far I'm willing to push Amazon's return policy... :-/

Oo, they be a new topic sheriff in town, an I be a skeered....

Quick question, what is, "pissing of the neighbors". To help move this discussion forward, I'd perhaps substitute, "off", or "on", in place of the awkward use of the preposition "of".

Are we having fun yet? Let's continue!

The headphones sound BETTER in any case for high-fidelity private listening as they don't have to battle room acoustics and other factors. [/qoute] "BETTER", (note the all caps), is a highly subjective term. Due to the physical nature of headphone transducers, they have far better "transient response", a a vast majority of loudspeakers. (But not all). The little bitty diaphragms start and stop a hell of a lot faster than the average Chinese production driver / cone assembly.

That said, the sounds in the world around us have their transient response blunted, by having to deal with, "room acoustics", or ambient noise, if you prefer. (To go even further off topic, and I do so hope I have your permission) I used to get a huge kick out of "beach movie musicals", which portrayed the starlet du jour and her love interest singing on the beach and playing acoustic guitar, while the sound coming out of the TV, was that of a Stratocaster being pumped into a couple of Fender Twins, with enough vocal reverb and echo to give a Gothic cathedral quality to what amounts to singing in a wheat field.

My point being, the same thing is true with headphones, in that they too much create an artificial environment. Even the loudest bands in a nightclub, are still very much affected by ambient sounds

Plus they can keep the other sounds out. - Although if I lived in a neighborhood as bad as you suggest yours is, I'd be afraid to fart for someone would shoot me for making the noise.
Not quite. I have to deal with a phobia of isolating myself from my environment. It's better to not be deaf when you're trying to cross the street in the big city. And it's better to have advance notice, when somebody starts to come on your property. I don't say my prayers at bedtime anymore, I arm the alarm system.

I also HATE the > 2.0 headsets. You only have two ears and can't hear more. I use the PC350's with positional games and you can tell EXACTLY where someone is. The higher driver counts just lose responsiveness to smaller drivers anyhow. Don't fool yourself.
The area of a transducer's cone or diaphragm is responsible for the distance it must travel to move, "XX",volume of air. The inverse square law governs that, and is a reciprocal equation. So smaller drivers equal less air moved, a given

As for 5 channel, (or more), headphones, I've never tried them. But the human ear is quite directional.

So, to come back to topic, I make do with whatever set of headphones will serve my exigent needs, and take them off ASAP.......Those are my "favorites".

But yeah, I suppose $20.00 headphones are better than $20.00 loudspeakers by a long shot. So, any headphones that I can buy for 20 bucks, are my "favorites

OK, I simply can't edit out the trailing "[/qoute]", in my post above. This is placing my response inside the quoted text. This software gets obstinate on occasion, and tonight seems to be one such time.

I recently bought two sets of headphones, the Vmoda Crossfade LP2 and the Denon ah d340. Both closed headphones as I travel a lot. Ultimately I kept the on ear Denon's and gave the Vmoda's to the wife. I preferred the sound of the Denon...

I mentioned 2 cans on my first post - the Audeze are for when it's quiet and I'm really enjoying my music as they're an open design. The HP100 are my closed cans fro when there is noise around me or I just don't want to bother others with my music. I never listen to music while on the move other than my car stereo so I don't have any truly mobile headphones (except a pair of BrainWave M5's that I never use because I don't like to put things in my ear). I also have a pair of Philips Fidelio X1 that I let my older daughter use, a pair of AKG Q701 that I let my younger daughter use, a pair of AKG K240 that I let my wife use, and a bunch of cheapos that I use when I'm mowing the lawn. I also have a second pair of HP100 that I use at work.

So you call me the topic sheriff and you're the spelling sheriff... What's your point?!? Go back to pissing OFF the neighbors... Around here if the cops are called out 2x or more by more then one neighbor (so you can't be trolled basically by the one jerk neighbor), it's up to a $2500 ticket for disturbing the peace... And I've had a $200 one before just for a football game (then I moved away from those jerks). Still, loud music would surely set it off.

That said I wouldn't wear giant headphones while out in the public area, they are for private home listening in my opinion. Same place you'd have the 'loudspeakers'...

This forum only requires verbal skills, which renders all of this moot. So, you can save all the hostility you displayed in your first response to me, for somebody that cares.

Keep in mind, said hostility was also noticed by another:
I'm not sure what level of outrage I should have with this, it ranges somewhere between 0 and high :). Capt was replying to me, where I was the one that brought up cops, which WAS relevant to this thread because that is why I use my headphones sometimes....[ ]....

I thought my meaning about the spelling issue was quite clear, "if you're going to troll me about topic, learn how to spell first". That way, you'll be able to give it your best effort.

I still don't like headphones, and I've taken steps to avoid using them. My "favorite headphones", are whatever 20 bucks will buy, after I break their predecessors.

don't want to here anything better .. this was expensive enough !

I guess for some people it's easy to read what you want something to imply. If your trying to troll me, stop. I won't ever get it unless someone points it out to me, all too often. A big downside of my flavor of high-functioning autism.

Blaming of the horrible phone auto-fix word junk on me when I miss off for of. Cute. You live up to you name sake cranky... love ignore though.

There was no hostility accept what you implied into it. Downside of written messages. My autism basically means I take every word literally. Hence why I answered every question. But since you clearly stated you don't care, go away.

But you continue to troll when I just keep answering the questions. If I mixed up two people in different responses, I apologize. But you throw out questions, I'm going to answer them.

EDIT: Ugg.. dang phone did it again. Submitted itself before I was ready. That's twice and I have to return to a PC to edit... Ugg.. Anyhow, it wasn't really any different but this is what I was trying to explain and more properly formatted. And for those people who keep messaging me about my situations, look up the URL of my namesake (though you found it cause that's where most of the messages are coming from). It's all in my website in more detail on all counts and items. Years of blogs on all of the specifics and thanks for the thoughts and kind words on the items!...

At some point, "better" becomes rather subjective, involving brand preference, the status of purchase price, and rather depends on whether or not, you're trained to know what to listen for. (If even enough difference to hear exists at the highest price points).

Beyond that, , I suppose you could subject a prospective pair of cans, to a battery of diagnostic tests.

Better to kick back and enjoy the hell out of what you've got.;)

Always glad to oblige in whatever capacity you request. In this case, I'll gladly be the pot, so that the kettle can call it "black". Or vice-versa...:D

I love my Sennheiser HD570s en HD598s.
Anything by Sennheiser starting around 100 euro is quite allright.

Photive X-Bass PH-BTX6. I recently got this headphone for under $80 from Amazon which is amazing considering this headphone sounds as good as the $300 audiophile pair.

Sennheiser Momentum - Hands down best Closed Headphones for under 500$

I've had a Razer Electra headset, great headset I'm not a audiophile though so I'm not sure how they stand against the others but it's pretty cheap got them for around $70 back then and you can replace the audio cable.

Currently using a pair of Corsair HS1A's, very comfortable, decent sound quality for a generic stereo headset, the bass could be better however. Previously I had a pair of Razer's original 5.1 headset the Barracudas, had lots of fun messing around with the individual speakers and making them rumble but they were heavy and uncomfortable, after a couple hours of use I would have to take them off to let my ears breath. If I can avoid using headsets altogether I usually do, even found myself not using one at all and playing without sound at a local Lan this past weekend. My sound system of choice will always be my Tangent 500's, from highs to lows they are some power towers that never disappoint, my neighbors can attest to that, even the ones across the street.

Stellseries Sibiria V2, so awesome sound with a pull-out mic. When I for example Half life 2, I scream when a zombie is behind me:DLOL!

My HD600's get a lot of use, especially in the evening 'cause I live in an apartment and only during the day can I give the speakers enough volume "to listen to the music" without getting evicted, although there are times I do prefer the headphones over speakers. Great headphones also cost less than great speakers, although my (relatively) cheapo speakers sound pretty fine to me at least.

Should mention I don't game at all and am a stereo purist (2 channels please)

PDP Afterglow Prismatic. Great bass, great sound, and loud! Great for playing COD, BF4 and Company of Heroes 2.
