What's the difference?

I was confused about the drive ribbon we are using now..
the old one that has a thick and all black connector on both sides for drives and mobo, and new one has thin and easily break..and has blue connecter for mobo and black for drives. what is the differences and uses of this two ribbon?
are they can be use to all hard drives?

the old is DMA33/66 newer thin is IDE ATA133
