What's the most expensive piece of tech you've ever bought and was it worth it?

My car I guess... But I think you meant computers :) (Though the programmable ECU was £600)

I have an Amiga X1000 that was £2100 (I'm undecided if this is worth it or not) , And a Dell XPS M1730 that was £1700 (about 6 years ago or more and I totally regret it as it was hopelessly unreliable in the hardware department) My desktop machine cost about £1500 in total about 3 years ago (It's been brilliant and still works well, Will no doubt last another 3 years at least).

I guess most expensive component was the PPC accelerator for my Amiga 1200, Which I can't recall the exact price of but it was horribly expensive at the time and totally worth it.

For things that I feel where expensive I would say my Mouse, It was £60, Not a lot in the grand scheme of things but since you can buy computers for less I feel mice are quite overpriced sometimes. (It has been a great mouse though)

Omg, I LOVED my XPS m1730!!! Got it on eBay for about $500 used (much like my Alienware) and my wife still uses it to this day :)

Hmm I went in a order every two years of one upping myself

$2200 on the 15" Dell Inspiron XPS in 2005, loved this laptop to pieces
$2500 on the 17" Dell XPS m1710 in 2007, this has been my mobile work horse for over 10 years now.
$2800 on the 17" Dell XPS m1730 in 2009, still kicking butt today, secondary PC always on my desk.

all 3 were worth every penny and all 3 still work today (but I don't use the 15" at all anymore), just did some rework on the 1730 this summer and the 1710 has a new LCD cover waiting to be installed.

I7-950 - When it was retailed for roughly $530. Put into my first PC build. Though, I did make a few mistakes on my first PC build, I dont regret getting that CPU. It was my first quad core, and it's still working today. Even after having it OCed to 4.2GHz for most of its life. Worth it? Even though the same CPU sells for a mere $50 now, yes. Considering its now 2016 and the CPU still kicks ***, it was totally worth it. (of course, considering there is limiting technology now, and with MBs lacking support for newer things I've upgraded, but kept this CPU and MB combo)

"What's the most expensive piece of tech you've ever bought and was it worth it?"

Some people arent getting the point. List one piece of tech, your whole PC is actually a collection of parts. Anyone posting OEM PC's should probably not be posting in here. lol jk

Nothing. Hardware tech is never worth it. My $40 "Golden Retriever: was my best purchase ever

When you look at it like that, nothing is worth purchasing because nothing will ever give you that kind of companionship for money.

Bah... your dog cost WAY more than $40.... consider how much you've spent on food, vet bills, etc.... dogs (kind of like children) are the most expensive things you can buy... Of course, depending on your outlook, they're either completely worth it or a complete waste...

Well, I custom built my gaming rig all at once... How can I say that just one of the Titan X's was the best piece of tech I bought? Would be kind of useless without the other 2, not to mention the rest of my awesome PC....

There was a "lol jk" on the end. I did not edit this post. I was thinking more like non-tech savvy people talking about their macbooks, IF I were serious. ;)

My favorite piece of tech would be my personal brainwave synchronizer. I've had a few over the years. They have helped me several times at different points in my life.

My GTX280 XFX back in the days Crysis was running so nice I still miss those days :)

Here in my country I paid about 1000USD for a GTX280.

Was it worth it? Without any shadow of doubt.

I really like mine too, But so far I have had to change the PSU, Graphics card, Optical drive and hard drive... Not to mention part of the keyboard failing to work now. It's a great machine but I got a Friday afternoon one I think.

PSP 4 for my daughter. I find it a bit expensive especially that the kind we purchased did not come in bundles (free games).Digital prices for new games are even expensive. Anyway, I feel that my daughter is having fun with it and so perhaps it could be worth it.

$600 for my 27 in. sony flat screen crt tv in 1997, with dual tuner, pip, s-video. I loved that tv, still have and will keep it until it dies. nobody keeps their crt tv's nowadays. it's good for old content that's in sd, eg. dvd's, old game systems, camcorder video. downside is it's about 175lbs. basically it's more sentimental than useful.
also in 1997 was a samsung dvd player, the first of the 2nd gen, was $450, but that was a xmas gift.

Core 2 Quad 9770 Extreme Edition was 1650.00 can. at NCIX came with UT3, well worth it .still kickin it today.
2 X 512 meg BFG tech 6800 ultra ,1299.00 can each ,2800.00 and change taxes inc.,was worth it for 4 days.got them just before the 7800 gtx shows up..though only the 256 meg version 7800GTX showed up first.

An XFX 8 GB Radeon R9 290X - one of only a handful of companies made the 8 GB variety - paid just over $600 CAD (including tax and shipping) + $$ for a custom waterblock; only to see the 300 series come out soon after with 8 GB of VRAM, for less money that I spent on the 290X, and MUCH cooler temps out of the box.

Was it worth it; seemed so at the time, but not so much right after the 300 series launch.

$3,100.00 Cdn in 2011 for an alienware Aurora R3. Win 10 released in July 2015. Dell refuses to upgrade the bios to allow Aurora R3 computers to run Win 10. It becomes a very expensive (and large) paperweight. Decent computer; amoral manufacturer.

Yeah... it's a known issue - but there are forums dedicated to making your life easier with Alienware (my Alienware 18 laptop has similar issues)...

Just to show how convoluted your solution is, here's how to make Win 10 run
_________________
1. Perform the Win 10 update as the Win 10 app thing informs you do.

2. At every restart, (that means warm reboot where the power stays on but the PC resets itself), you MUST instantly Hold the On/Off Power button on top of your Aurora R3 case down until it powers off completely.

3. Turn power back by pressing On/Off Power button.

4. Go get a beer and sit back and wait until first restart. Have finger poised on On/Off Power button. As soon as the computer restarts. This is obvious as the Dell BIOS logo appears quite fast. Same again. Power off. Hold it down. It might take a few seconds but it will power off.

5. Power on again. Do this for the next several restarts, approx. 3 I think as by then I'd had about 4 beers I think. And do this until you finally get to 100% and you are entering Win 10 welcome screen etc... It will take your time so be vigilant and watch the progress bar and keep finger ready on On/Off button.

6. I did this multiple times and was able to nail the last attempt and finally get into Win 10. Once in Win 10 there will be a heap of updates and downloads going on. Let them complete.

7. Once your system is happy DOWNLOAD the Renesas USB driver update from Intel via the link posted above from markimusprime. My Alienware Aurora R3 has no problem rebooting now. Before the USB driver update my PC would freeze exactly the same way as it did when trying to install Win 10. This is simply the problem with our motherboard. The USB 3.0 driver was causing the system to not reboot without total power off first. Dell needs to post the latest Renesas driver on their website for all Aurora R3 owners.

Yeh! Been there, did that. Worked fine until I tried to install the 1st Win 10 update. It just kept rolling back to the original
version.
But I did finally solve the issue. Took the guts out, threw the Aurora in the garbage and had a new unit built.

Cest la vie!

Panasonic Sr. Partner, 640k RAM & twin 5.25 inch floppies (couldn't afford the $800 10MB Card drive option), ~6 in monochrome screen. 36 pounds of portable heaven for a paltry $3600 ($7500 in 2017's $).
Still runs, as noisy as the day it arrived - yes I used it on an airplane, lol.

What a tough question. if I think back far enough (old person here) it has to be when I preordered the very first sega genisis sytem in the whole town back in the late 80's.
if I remember it was something around 1000.00 with a couple of games which comes out to about 3000.00 in todays money.
was it worth it ?
to me it was, being a young man,my house was a very popular place to be.

My first mech keyboard (CMStorm quickfire TK for $150, prices differ a lot here in Argentina).
