What's the newest info on fan adapters?

Always looking for a way to make my system cooler...and quieter. Anyone read anything lately on fan adapters (allowing one to mount an 80mm fan to a heat sink that normally takes a 60mm fan)?

Last I read, which was quite a while ago, the jury was still out on the effectiveness of this process to bring more cooling with bigger and quieter fans. Interested in what anyone might have to say about this. Thanks
