When playing a movie or game system shuts down

everytime I play a dvd movie on windows media player 10 or if i try to play a game on my laptop, the system restarts and states something about system recovery. what could the problem be

it's likely to be a ram problem. run some memory testing software.
also update all of your drivers, especially sound and video.

Is the fan in your laptop turn on? You can usually hear it when it does. Playing games and movies will cause the CPU and video card to heat up and if the fan isn't working it would overheat and shutdown/reboot.

Check your event log and see if there is anything in the system part.

As gaming puts the most amount of stress on the cpu /video it is probably a heat issue...as the others suggested check to see if the fans are in good working order. You could also try raising the base a little to help with airflow.

Use the laptop for what it's designed for, portability. Also a good excuse to build a new gaming rig...
