Which router is better?

So I'm completely out of the loop with routers. Basically I bought a Netgear router in 2014 and was supplied recently with a standard looking router called a Zyxel Fritz Box from my broadband provider.

Is there any real performance difference from the two or will I just keep the one that came with the broadband provider installed?

Zyxel Fritz Box 7430: https://www.amazon.de/AVM-FRITZ-TK-Anlage-DECT-Basis-Mediaserver/dp/B0117ZTDSG

WLAN Typ 802.11n, 802.11B, 802.11G

Netgear DGN2200: http://www.netgear.ie/home/products/networking/dsl-modems-routers/dgn2200.aspx#tab-techspecs

IEEE 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz

Any help would be much appreciated!

They are basically identical, covering the 2.4ghz band. I prefer Netgear and have two myself.

If I were to replace the WiFi router, I would get a dual band, 802.11ac
  • The first thing to get out of the way is - like past Wi-Fi standards - 802.11ac is backwards compatible with 802.11b, g and n. This means you can buy an 802.11ac-equipped device and it will work just fine with your existing router.

I would stick with the Netgear and tell your service provider that you don't want their router, and prefer to use your own.

If you can, I would recommend getting an AC router like @jobeard said since that will future-proof your setup.

Make sure it is compatible with your broadband provider's service and modem though.

If a modem has an ethernet RJ45 output, then it WILL be compatible with any router.

Modems however are a different matter as there's DSL vs Cable service and the modem has to perform to different standards.
