Why dose everyone like the Ipod?

Just continuing from a privious topic why dose everyone love the Ipod?
I mean it has some serious fundimental flaws.

Whoa, I could not read a single thing that said until I highlighted it.

I think the iPod is pretty cool. It was the first of the MP3 players with hard drives in them, and I've heard it's excellent. If I had the money, I'd buy one.

What's wrong with them? Is it the way they look? Is it that they're made by Apple?

What kind of "fundamental flaws" are we talking about here, for the iPod?

It plays MP3s stored on a laptop drive... How can you screw that up?

I have a Nomad Jukebox II which works quite well. The only complaint I could really launch against the iPod is the excessive price, as with all things Apple®

it is a pretty good mp3 player although it is really expensive.
you can create on-the-fly playlists with the newer revision, however, but it gets erased when you try to make another on-the-fly playlist.

as i said again, apple products are really expensive. apple's advertisements uses the appeal to snobbery approach. this is what they are trying to tell to their potential customers: "buy our stuff. we are so much more sophisticated than those other computer brands. we have so much style. we are cutting edge. we are so in. if you want to get left behind and not be cool and hip like our apple users, don't get an apple. otherwise, be different. spend a lot more money on something so much sexier. buy apple."

and it actually works to any extent too.

it looks cool

thats prolly the reason i have an MD and not an iPOD. my dad keeps saying "i wont buy you something just because it looks cool" *sigh*

Okay where do I start?
1.Firstly the price its expencive. But thats okay a lot of things in the electronics market are expencive, But with this expence there is useally lonagivity in the products. Not with the Ipod. Beacause of the design the battery is iriplacable and as everyone knows rechargable batterys go dead after a certain amount of recharges giving the $500 Ipod a maximum life of about a year.

2.Back to the battery. 8 hours? MAX? come on thats way to short. Ive gone on many car journeys way longer then 8 hours.

3.The way apple designed the thing and market it you have to buy a lot of expencive addones and accsesorys, eg. travel plug adaptors. Reaguler travel plug adaptors dont fit the Ipods cleaverly designed recharger module so you have to buy apples expencive "travel kit" which I think is twice the price of regular addapters.

4.For the less expencive (but still danm expencive) models they dont include any of the accesorys so you have to buy em seperatly to make use of a load of the things features (3.)

Im sure theres some other stuff aswell but I cant think now.

Dont be a fool. Dont go with the crowd to get something that looks cool. Its a bad investment.

1. Nimh batteries....infinitley rechargeable, you can top them up whenever as they have no memory and they will last for over 1 year.

2. 8 hours? yes this is quite low, but still you are spinning a little hard drive at a very high speed. the ideal would be no moving parts at all, but you dont get the capacity. so it is a compromise.

3. apple designed the plug that way because it makes the whole thing thinner. if you see the old i-pod it was a lot thicker, due to the design of the plugs. i agree there may have been some thought about marketing there, but this is no reason to hate it.

4. if you are paying less, you expect to get less. the docking station is not essential, and the remote on the headphones is not essential. in fact a lot of people who buy one will be using different headphones with it anyway, so i see no problem there.

i totally disagree with you, as you may have noticed. i think its a very well designed, and very well marketed piece of kit.

i consider myself a person that doesnt go with the crowd, but i do want one. just because it is very good at what it does. so its a bit expensive, but a jaguar and a toyota will do the same job right? so why pay more? well im willing to pay more because of all the positive reviews, the sound quality, the modifiability and all the add-ons you can get, the fact you can add a song every day for the next 20 years....the list does go on.

its nice of you to post your views and im sorry if i have offended you in any way, i just wanted to post my views because i see this froma totally different angle to you.

infinitley rechargeable=Impossible.

A lot of other mp3 players do it such as the creative zen extra which has a 60 gig hard drive and has a battery life of 14 hours with a replaceable battery.

I think the remote is detachable which means you can use it with other headphones (1 point to you)

the fact you can add a song every day for the next 20 years

As I said there are bigger hard drive mp3 players and anyway the ipod wont last 20 years because the battery is iriplaceable :D.

well im willing to pay more because of all the positive reviews, the sound quality

Okay back to the creative zen again(no im not trying to sell it ;)) I have heard from pepole that have extencivly used both the Ipod and the zen and the say there is higher audio fedility on the zen(this isnt suprising as Creatives whole buissness is sound).
And about reviews, im not saying that they are wrong or false but large companys (such as apple) have been known to pay off reviewers, its been a long time scince I have taken great head to reviews in big magizines, I useally look for customer reviwes.

No offence taken :)

1. ok, but the batteries are going to last a long time, if you take care of them properly. plus the fact i will be using mine in the car most of the time anyway, so it can run from the cigarette lighter (and yes i know it involves buying that "sepecialist adapter).
i agree its not possible but batteries have comea long way and theyre nowhere near as bad as you make it sound.

2. its due to haw the thing works, i mean each thing is going to have different features right? such as the ipod has 32minute anti shock protection, which is probably what eats up all of the battery.

3. .......

4. yeh there are bigger mp3 players out there, but it depends on what you want. i dont have 60gb of music, or even 20gb for that matter!!

5. fair enough, there will always be something that is better than what you have, but as far as sound quality goes, the i-pod is better than any minidisc player, and also, if i wanted the utmost sound quality i would come home and listen to my hifi.

and reviews, well i have seen enough customer reviews to say that it is amazing and you must get one, fair enough i have also seen a few bringing up the battery life, butthis doesnt bother me. as far as the big online reviews such as toms hardware etc etc. i dont believe they have been bought off.

im glad no offence has been taken.....see what happens when you get two cynics with different points of view :p

If im not mistaken the zen has about 7(or 21 I cant remember) miutes protection which is more then enough and it has almost twice the ipod battery life plus if you are going on a long trip you can bring two or three spare batterys for the zen.

fair enough, there will always be something that is better [sounding] than what you have

Why dont you buy the beter one so? I mean the zen is a hell of a lot cheaper then the ipod for nearly all versions plus you can get the zen in 20,30,40 and 60 gig sizes depending on your need.

Price comparison:
these are in british pounds taken from amazon.co.uk(the cheapest uk site i could find for the zen and ipod)

60 gig ipod=dosnt exist 60 gig zen=£293.79
40 gig ipod=£394.99
30 gig ipod=£365.99 30 gig zen=£194.99
15 gig ipod=£249.99
10 gig ipod=£219.99

amazon didnt stock other versions but they are available from amazon.com or the manufacturer

ok, i am now an owner of one of these so called dirty i-pods. and i have also now seen a creative zen.

both have their good points, and the battery thing is a bit of a worry, but im glad i have the i-pod. i just prefer the way it is designed, the interface is (imo) superior with a better screen etc.

why is it that when something good comes around there is always a select group who hate it?? i cant think of one consumer product which has been really popular, without a group of people who hate it.

still, i like my i-pod.:D

Zen is smaller ;)

I contemplated getting an iPod but after that [see url] and I also heard too many complaints with it.

So now I'll buy a cheaper Zen NX Xtra.

Which zen were you looking at xtrmn8r?
Cause theres several diffrent versions of the zen and the new one (the zen extra) has a new much bigger screen and revamped layout.

Also that site looks scaraly pro ipod.

Anything that wants to defend an obvious fault is pro-that :p

But. Choose for yourself, I personally love Creative's products so, yah...

and i-pods dirty secret looks distinctly anti i-pod.....so what. its very hard to try and find somewhere that is unbiased about anything nowdays.

i dont know which model it was i was looking at, but the screen was quite small and (imo) looked a bit manky. i have seen newer ones and they are better, but i still think they arent up to the standard of the i-pod.

I hate Macs, but I have to say I'm a fan of the Ipod. It looks cool and its the pioneer of the mp3 player.

Needs to come down in price however. I can't wait for the release of there new smaller cheaper one next month.

Here are the screen difrences between old and new versions:

i hate mac with a passion. i have worked with their computers since i was in 1st grade and will continue til im out of school, because thats all my school has. but i have to say the ipod isnt so bad. it has a nice design but is priced way too high.
