My current system

Pentium 4 630
Gigabyte GA-8IP775-G
1GB (2x512) PQI PC3200 400Mhtz dual channel mode
PNY Geforce 6600 256MB AGP
Western Digital 160GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive
Maxtor 80GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive
Sony DVD-ROM
Thermaltake 420watt PSU

I heard rumors Vista will still be "average" with 1GB of RAM , and I want the best optimum performance.

Will it at least run Vista smoothly?

It will run it. Drop it down to the Windows Classic theme and you won't see much of a difference in speed between it and XP. That advice goes for any computer.

One of the nice features of vista is it has a "user experience" self evaluation tool. By running this tool, it will provide feedback in 4 or 5 areas (video, cpu, hd, etc) on a scale of 1 to 10. Vista is graphic card intense so I would recommend a 256MB card -- which the card you have will do fine. Once you load vista and run the tool, the scores will show you what areas you need to improve (or upgrade really) to get better performance.
