tapisrv is the Telephony driver. If you've installed modem drivers, or some form of telephone dialler software, this may be causing the error.

If you can get online, I assume you're either using an ethernet or usb network/modem to get online, or that tapisrv is restarting properly

What is the exact error message? It'll give us more to work off.

Hrm. Would the modem be a Conexant/Rockwell WinModem (HCF or HSF) by any chance? This seems very familiar to me, from when I was using a EuroTek (no, I'd never heard of them either) WinModem that had terrible terrible Windows 98 compatibility issues.

Its not nessacerily the cause of the problem

But it is a possible. Its presumably the only telephony device on the computer.

Take the modem out and boot up, and see are the errors still there.

Check the version of your MSVCRT40.DLL
If it is the one from the original W98SE
you may get a newer version here
    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcrt40

Before you install that, rename your current MSVCRT40.DLL into someting like MSVCRT40.OLD or copy it to a save place. Then copy the new one over the old one, resp. into the same directory and reboot.

    Wierd Tapisrv.exe problem

I'm running Win98SE and I just started getting a "Tapisrv.exe has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down, etc." error. When I click details, it says: "TAPISRV caused an invalid page fault in
    module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7b997.
    Registers:
    EAX=00000000 CS=0177 EIP=bff7b997 EFLGS=00000246

The wierd thing is, it also prevents windows explorer from working, including putting Icons on the desktop. The only reason I'm able to use the computer at all is because I just happened to have a copy of Tapisrv.exe on a different drive. I have tried to rename the old file and copy the file that works into the C:\windows\system directory, but every time I reboot it still gives me the same error. I then have to FIND>tapisrv.exe, and then doubleclick on the good one. This situation must end.

Does anyone know what I should to do?

    Thanks,

    Fishzilla
