Win Xp Sp2, Can't Install Any Programe

i am using win xp sp2 (updated with microsoft patches recently released )and i installed norton internet security 2005 ,but now i coudn't install anything .if i went for installation it shows install shield error(1628:failed to complete installation) and even if i went for removing any application also it hangs for long & gives can't gather required information.even it takes long time after rebooting to show the windows desktop.pl help me

simple solution? uninstall norton i.sec....... use norton remover apps if needed, then try again...

I second getting rid of Norton IS. it is also possible that the widows installer has been corrupted. if you have your XP SP2 disk then put it in the drive and open a command prompt type sfc /scannow this will run system file checker and will replace and damaged or missing system files.

I third it. Do what iss said, that will most likely fix it.
