Win2K Pro missing desktop .......

Hi all,

I'm a first time poster with an interesting dilema: My machine running Win2K pro is booting up, but not displaying the desktop. The cursor is there, and in short if I cntl+alt+del into task manager, I can initiate explorer.exe and pretty much operate as usual (not network connectivity, task bar, start button, etc.).

This occured after having cleaned off several threats that another user managed to give me. You know, "Click here to protect against spyware" and the like.

Has anyone ever experienced this missing desktop phenomenon? I've been working on this for several days... I'm no sys admin, but I've tried everything I can think of. Safe mode boots up exactly the same, and the last known good config gives me the same thing.

Please let me know what you all think!
Thanks in advance!
