Resolved Win32 Alureon-PS - WindowFixDisk, web-redirects, audio adverts and more..

While browsing yesterday morning I had what looked like a windows security authorisation window pop up saying Adobe Flash player wanted to update and should I allow it. I allowed it and then within about 5 minutes I started getting an error pop up from the system tray saying there was a hard drive error and I should restart.

On restarting I was presented with a WindowsFixDisk program, which eventually led me to a pay screen. A lot of files and folders seemingly vanished, and google kept re-directing. Every time I launched firefox a file called fau.exe would launch. Killing that process then allowed me to use the internet and do a bit of research.

I ran MBAM and it found a few things and cleaned them up, I then ran GMER and things got even more screwey. While running I got another windows security authorisation window that wanted me to all Update.exe. I said no, but then a program called VIsta Anti-Spyware launched, and what looked like the Windows Security Centre screen but with the firewall as inactive, and no anti-virus software active (when a quick look into my system tray tells me it is active).

After a bit of a look around on the net I found a program called TDSSKiller but that wouldn't run. I tried running GMER again and I got a BSOD. When my computer restarted I could logon but after a few moments I'd get BSOD again with the error Bad Pool Caller...

After a few more restarts windows start-up repair thing started and I was asked to do a system restore, which I did... the most recent update was about 10 minutes after the infection started so I'm back to square one.

This time I went through your steps. I ran Avast and it picked out Win32 Alureon-PS and Java:Agent-FF[Expl]. It asked me what to do with them... and because I didn't know wether to delete them or not I put them in Avasts 'vault'.

I ran MBAM and here is the log:

With GMER, I followed the instructions on your 8 steps but it didn't say to actually press the 'Scan' button... so all I've got is this:

I did disable Avast while scanning, but up there it seems to suggest it is running. Is Avast one of those programs where you have a hard time truly disabling it?

Also, while running GMER I got the same Update.exe request and the same behaviour with the VIsta Anti-Spyware thing.

Welcome to TechSpot! I'll help you sort through the problems

Note: The Rogue Error Fix malware is in abundance now. It's a hard one for the users because it actually "invents" a problem, gives an alert and then a site to click on to fix it. These are not real problems and it's important you don't try to resolve them by running random programs.
===================================
Please run the following while I finish going over these logs:
Download Combofix from HERE or HEREhttp://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe and save to the desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    whatnext.png
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
& follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes , a report will be generated-it will open a text window. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply..
Re-enable your Antivirus software.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
==============================
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus scan HEREhttp://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the Active X control to install
  4. Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  5. Click Start
  6. Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  7. Click Scan
  8. Wait for the scan to finish
  9. Click on "Copy to Clipboard"> (you won't see the 'clipboard')
  10. Click anywhere in the post where you want the logs to go, the do Ctrl V. The log will be sent from the clipboard and pasted in the post.
  11. Re-enable your Antivirus software.
NOTE: If you forget to copy to the clipboard you can find the log here:
C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.
==========================================
Please do not use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you, unless I direct you to. Do not use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.

Hello Bobbeye,

Just to let you know that I had to do a format and re-install.

The virus developed further. Firstly it undid all program associations so I couldn't run .exe files, and then it kep changing my internet settings so I couldn't get online. By this point it was taking me 20 minutes to get about 3 minutes of internet time...

What a horrible virus.

Thanks for your help though,
Alex

Thank you for the update, Alex. I could 'see' some of the malware entries. Do your system a favor>>>>

1. Update Java: Current is v6u25. Check this site .Java Updates Uninstall any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs (Java(TM) 6 Update 13 & Java(TM) 6 Update 7) as they are vulnerabilities for the system.

2. Update the Adobe Reader: Current is v10 (X) Visit this Adobe Reader site Uninstall any earlier updates as they are vulnerabilities.(Adobe Reader 8.1.0)

3. P2P or 'file sharing' Warning:
Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. I suggest that you uninstall Vuze & Vuze Remote Toolbar for the following reasons:
  • As long as you are using file sharing networks and programs which are from sources that are not documented, you cannot verity that a download is legitimate.
  • Malware writers use these program to include malicious content.
  • File sharing is usually unmonitored and there is a danger that your private files might be accessed.
  • The 'sharing' also includes malware that the shared system has on it.
  • Files that are illegal can be spread through file sharing.

Please read the information on P2P Warning to help you better understand these dangers.

4. Be aware that the Conduit Engine often tracks bck.

Stay safe!
