Windows 10 build with Cortana is now available to Windows Insiders

So I login my MS account on my PC. Now Cortana works like I am on my phone. I tell her to open Google Chrome sure enough she opens Internet Explorer instead. I tell can you open desktop apps she still opens up Internet Explorer. I don't see MS getting this ready anytime soon. Cortana acts like she on a Smartphone instead of desktop PC.

Another thing is why is MS still have those arrows on short cuts. It's not necessary to still be doing that. I have to use 3-rd party software to remove them always. So the desktop looks neat looking.

I downloaded and installed the the the Tech Preview only a few days ago and must say that I really like it. Things are definitely a little snappier and games are running very well. As soon as I read this article I downloaded the latest build, unfortunately the upgrade stalls and crashes at 7% . Any suggestions? I don't want to reformat yet since the prior install is working perfect.

I do wonder if after a few years of updates, Windows 10 will be just as snappy. Or if Windows 10 at that time will perform on par with Windows 7.

To me at this is equivalent to comparing athletic abilities of teenager to that of a person 4 times their age. Of course the teenager is not going to be bound by the forces of time, but an older person will be. But guess who is the wisest when compared.

I've just got back from the gym and that's cheered me up. :)

WHY are the icons so ugly? I mean that Computer icon looks like it's from Windows 95. Hope they change it in the future.

You can most likely change the icon yourself if it's annoying you. I changed some years ago just to see if I could.

I can understand why you wouldn't want the entire interface built around speech and touch. But they can be interesting additions, if the traditional input methods are not completely done away with.

But I see this more as a crossover from the mobile world. It makes sense on a cellphone when you are driving your car to work. You can't be typing on the tiny keyboard as easily as you could speak what you want into the phone. But who is gonna wanna use Cortana at a desktop? Handicapped people who have carpel tunnel, arthritis maybe, all well and good. Again, I really don't have any interest in it at all. I guess I'm just too damn lazy a person to care. It takes more energy to talk than to type in my opinion. And I don't feel like repeating myself a 100 times anyway. "Sorry, I don't understand what you said. Can you say that again please". No, I can't say it again.

As long as it remains exclusively an additional type of functionality. But it doesn't sound like that's the case at all. Very tightly integrated into Windows 10(LOL, love that name) from all that I am hearing so far. Hope I can shut it off. But then again Microsoft probably knows what I need in life better than I do, just like they did when they released Windows 8, right Microsoft?

I agree.
I don’t like Cortana.
It’s yet another “cloud” service that transmits personal data, needs a permanent internet connection, will display ads. I don’t need that and I hope there will be a way to disable it.

On a smartphone, why not ? It can be useful when driving, when one cannot use their hands and needs to send a text message for instance.

But on a computer, it has virtually no use.
So it feels out of place, and I really, really hope they will allow to disable it.

The build is still quite rough on my SP3. But it's much better than 9879. I'm finding that I'm having to learn where things are again compared to 8.1 and a few things are a bit of a mess but I think that given that it's in this state with the release still at least 5-6 months away is pretty promising in that it appears that there is only really polish left to do with the UI.

I download this to NAS then launch it from there and finally mount the *.ISO to drive letter H. Run setup that's it. No issues with the installation from the prior Windows 10 Preview.

I re downloaded and was able to install from Flash Drive. My Creative sound driver had to be downloaded as well, but otherwise it's running fine.

A much more stable build. It also fixed many compatibility problems I've had with some software and some games.
I can finally recommend win 10 to others.

Hi, I've been testing all the preview builds and I'm very pleased over all. No issues with software and hardware driver installation and use of. I use my laptop in an observatory setting where it can get very cold so I'm starting to use Cortana to save taking my gloves off, although at present it's a bit hit and miss. In the long term I would like Cortana to be linked with whatever program is open on the desk top, such as a planetarium in my case so that I could say for example "slew to ....." and the 'scope would go there. Perhaps MS could let Cortana learn the users speech by making a recording and then typing back what it thought you said, when you check Cortana's spelling, edit where there are mistakes, then hopefully Cortana would link what it thought you said to what you typed in, maybe a phrase could be linked to an action, you could do this with all the phrases you might need on a daily basis. I know this would require a lot of work by MS and 3rd party program writers but users would then have a very worthwhile tool in Cortana.
