Microsoft has announced at Gamescom 2015 in Cologne, Germany that Windows 10 will be hitting the Xbox One sometime in November, complete with a new dashboard and interface that fits with Microsoft's improved OS design.

Windows 10 on Xbox One is primarily focused on speed, allowing users to perform tasks, open apps and switch between them faster than the previous software iteration. There will also be a range of new features included in the OS update, such as Cortana integration for those with a Kinect.

The Xbox One's Windows 10 update will bring DirectX 12 to the console for the first time. Although the Xbox One was already using a modified version of DirectX 11 that gave developers closer access to the console's hardware, an update to DirectX 12 should bring new graphics effects and slightly improved performance.

Members of Microsoft's Xbox One Preview program will be able to update their consoles to Windows 10 in September, giving Microsoft two months to gather feedback and improve the operating system before it hits the general public.

Alongside the public launch of Windows 10 on Xbox One in November, Microsoft will also be releasing Xbox 360 backwards compatibility to the public, as was announced earlier. The feature has already been in the hands of preview program members, though Microsoft are working on adding support for more games before a public launch.

Might the usage of DX12 allow developers to release graphical title updates? E.x. 900p games now run in 1080p? Just little tweaks.
