Solved Windows 7: Failing to Open programs, suspecting malware/viruses

Hrm.... Well I got about 320K files done. I'm about a third of the way there? I'm not sure how feasible it is to get this done since I have no internet at home to use. I'll see if I can stay over at a friend's place and scan all night.

Sorry about that. I talked to a friend of mine about using his internet over night and during the day. That should be this weekend.
I apologize about that again, I'll be sure to let you know when I have that planned.

Yes! Sorry, I've been having troubles with my wireless router for the past weekend. (Century Link's PK5001A) It has moments where it likes to kick me for 2-20 minutes at a time. (atleast 2 times a day)
Would the scan be able to complete if I'm getting about 0.89 Mb/s bandwidth?
I'll be trying that. I may end up plugging in an ethernet cable to see if that's more stable.

I agree. Currently we had a Win XP machine (2005 eMachine) hooked up wirelessly and my Acer Aspire laptop. (sometimes another laptop is hooked up)
I'll see how the ethernet connection works with the modem and report back.
Hopefully I'll be able to take care of this scan tonight.

The connection is semi-stable. My speed went up to .9Mb/s and then crashed. It's back at 0.8 and seems more stable.
I downloaded and have been using peerblock since a couple days ago, and just now saw something interesting.
I got this log:
83.149.8.175 with the range listed at: botnet on MegaFon at 21:54:42, 37, 32, 27, and 22.
Any ideas what that is? Something that might lead to what we're looking for with the ESET scan?

Ah alright. Which forum would you suggest? Going to exit steam and attempt to get this scan started and hopefully done by tomorrow.

(missed the deadline for the edit)
Scan is underway. The internet kicks every now and then, but briefly. But oddly enough when the DSL is still up and the "Internet" is disconnected, it still scans.
Ethernet is working great, 141xxx files scanned so far. Running for nearly 2 hours. Going to sleep very soon and hopefully it'll be done by morning.

Completed the scan it looks like. Took about 15 hours and nothing was found.
It scanned about 400K files, but I might have 800k? (unless I removed enough recently that it would account for that)

Your computer is clean

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll create fresh, clean restore point, using following OTL script:

Run OTL

  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following:

Code:
:OTL
:Commands
[purity]
[emptytemp]
[EMPTYFLASH]
[emptyjava]
[CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
[Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post resulting log.

2. Now, we'll remove all tools, we used during our cleaning process

Clean up with OTL:

  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.

3. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

4. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

5. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

6. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

7. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

8. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

9. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): https://www.techspot.com/downloads/4898-secunia-personal-software-inspector-psi.html. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

10. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

11. (Windows XP only) Run defrag at your convenience.

12. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

13. Read:
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html
Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/keep-your-computer-safe-online/

14. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing.

I have the log, and OTL seemed to be not working. (or something was blocking it)
I found WerFault.exe running so I stopped that process and shortly after OTL did it's thing. It said the service for Systerm Restore wasn't working, but here's the log:

All processes killed

See if you can reset system restore manually.
Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

[RIGHT]Everything seems to be running fine. I'm not getting lag when booting up (atleast right now) everything is running smooth.
When consent.exe asks me if I 'really want' to run a program it connected right away this time instead of taking its time loading.[/RIGHT]

Yes you had to turn it on manually.

If no other issues....

Good luck and stay safe :)

Thanks! I'll keep up with the scans and etc you posted.
I had some trouble updating the VLC plugin for Firefox, but I've gotten a couple plugins updated.
Thanks a lot for all the help, I'm recommending this site to anyone who has computer problems.
