Windows 98 upgrade to xppro and reformatt prob

    I have another pc that i upgraded from windows 98 to xppro with sp2 the upgrade seemed to be fine until the pc would not shut the normal way so i had to manually turn the hard drive off. I then used my windows 98 hp recovery disks and reformatted back to windows 98 now when i restart the pc i get this error message on a black screen.

    Read error while reading drive.

    I have Hirems boot cd if that can be of use to fix the prob.
