windows activation problems

hey dude,
my friend bought toshiba L30 psl30L 00m017
and it's come with genuine windows xp start edn with serial no at the back of the laptop.

when first boot up, there is error said that i haven't activate this microsoft and i can't log in if i haven't.
so i activate it by phone, and it can't activate and always back to activate with phone.

so any idea?
there is two type of activation code right?
1: numbers only
2: numbers and digit.

the laptop didn;t comes with numbers S/N.

Well, if that copy of Windows really is genuine and there is no sticker, then the serial is somewhere in the box Windows came in.

Where did your friend buy the laptop from? If you didn't get any COA with the thing, then that copy of Windows is pirated. If it was a store, go back and demand a COA.
