Windows Explorer extremely slow to open ANY document

When trying to open a .doc, .xls,.pdf, even a .txt file, the corresponding program takes almost 2 minutes to open the document. Disconnecting the network cable, the documents open almost immediately. I disconnected all mapped drives, no icons on taskbar point to network drives,...

What's causing the slowdown?

What sort of a Network are you on? Or is this just your cable connection network?
Are you certain no processes are running in the background such as a virus or spyware scan? Has this been happening for a number of days?
