Uninstall the beta Windows Live Messenger, then install the final release:
    http://get.live.com/messenger

I don' think these are related but you can remove them; Please re-open HiJackThis and scan.*Check* the boxes next to all the entries listed below:
Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis and reboot into Safe Mode:
    Start> Run> type in 'msconfig' without quotes> enter> Selective Startup> Startup tab> UNCHECK any
    Live Messenger processes> Apply> OK
Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs> uninstall the Windows Live Messenger beta>
Reboot into Normal mode. Close the nag message that comes up after checking 'don't show this message again.'. Stay in Selective Startup.

Now install the full WLM program.

Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Remove any 'left-over' WLM files, the try the reinstall:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Download the programs> Save to desktop> Double click to run setup. Once installed, open. Refer to the HijackThis log for the file names, remove them for WLM in the Utility.. You may not have all of them now, but if you have ANY of them, remove.

First, you admit you were using a BETA version of messenger which means it likely to have serious problems. It's in the customer testing phase (I used to be a high tech engineer! I know all about this stage! NOT FUN!!)

Next, have you applied Service Pack 3 for Windows XP recently? I have encounted a number of problems with SP3 for WinXP and Windows Live Toolbar for IE7 and Windows Live Messenger. If this is case, then uninstall the Windows Live Toolbar in Add/Remove Programs. In fact I'd recommend uninstalling EVERYTHING to do with Windows Live. Then re-install EVERYTHING! That should solve any compatibility issues with SP3 for WinXP.

Also, are you running Windows XP Media Center? If so, do *NOT* apply SP3. It makes WinXP Media Center unstable. Had this firsthand experience with some customers.

    Moderator Edit:
Note: SP3 is quite safe to install on XP anything
