Having problems deleting mail in windows mail in Vista, I have managed to delete most of them by trying a repair to the database but there are still over 700 left, they are all either in the deleted items folder or the jusnk mail folder. The one thing they have in common is that all will not open and seem to be corrupt. I suspect Mcafee may be implicated in the cause of the corruption as it has not being working correctly for a few weeks, it has now been deleted.
Has anyone any suggestion how to get rid of these mails?

Firstly try in Safe Mode
  • Shut down Windows Vista.
  • Turn on the computer and press F8 key repeatedly while the computer is starting up.
  • Select Safe Mode by using arrow keys and then press ENTER.
  • Log on to the system by using your user account when the user selection screen appears.
  • Open your Windows Mail, and check that you are able to delete the messages

Windows Mail stores your email, folders for newsgroups, and account settings in its own storage folder. By default, this storage folder is placed on the C drive, under your username in the AppData\Local\Microsoft\ Windows Mail directory.

Locate this directory and rename the Deleted Items to OldDeleted
Or rename the entire Windows Mail folder to Old Windows Mail

You may need to unhide system folders to view this folder
  • Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button
    VistaStartButton.jpg
, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
